How did you come up with your name here in PC Guide, as you can see member usernames are not your real names.;) Okay, mine isn't that exciting. I like the color green but wanted something to go with it, and thought of envy. See, told ya!!! :p Looking forward to reading all your replies.:D

Not a bad idea to bring this back for some of the newer members. Most of the regulars who have been here a while will remember these (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9436) threads (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9397).
Mine comes from my fascination with Discordianism and the Law of Fives (http://www.erisx.com/jd/disco/fives.html). Plus my name, Chris.
Eutychus
03-27-2003, 02:17 PM
Mine comes from my personal dot com. Which came about because my first choices were already registered...
Eutychus (the name means fortunate) was the person in the New Testament book of Acts who dozed off during one of the Apostle Pauls' long sermons and fell three stories to his death. (The good news is that Paul prayed and the young man was brought back to life.) Anyway, it's difficult for me to think of Eutychus without smiling and I hope that I bring a smile or two to others along life's journey.

Mine comes from the various machines I own.
They are all "cross breeds" or mutts. I pick through the trash piles and drag home everything I can find. I piece all the junk together till I get something that works. The results are not always pretty, but they are functional.:D

GreenNV, if yours is boring then mine is absolutely boring....M(ike) J(middle initial) C (first letter of lastname).

My mom.
Or maybe my dad.
Could have been my uncle,
My uncle could be my dad!
Heck the DNA string is rather short around some of these parts... :D
I just DON'T KNOW......
But my eyes are green...

OK.....The first three letters are my initials. (How original)
The rest is a brief description of my basic personality. :D
(Those of you that know me, I'm sure this makes perfect sense.)
** Note** "jabarnut" was in no way intended to be a variation of
"juggernaut" (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=juggernaut) ...The meaning of which can be rather strange.
So for those of you that first saw my name and thought: "geesh, this guy can't even spell", you were wrong.
Well, ok...You were right too. ;)

ZURKE

I have a fascination with early Norse people.
The European towns that they frequently raped, pillaged and burned coined the phrase Berserkers.
To describe how they saw these savages.
The Random House Websters dictionary defines it as "violently or destructively frenzied, frenzied warrior".
I derived the name Zurke from the term Berserk.

Grandma gave the name to me! On my first payday,at 17, the lady at the bank wouldn't cash my check, so I laid on the floor and threw a tantrum till she changed her mind:p Grandma almost had a stroke, and dubbed me Goober:D

Sorry about the second post folks....(That's why they call me a nutcase)
Anyway, I completely forgot to mention that "jabarnut" is not intended to be a variation of "Jabberwock" (http://www.bluestraveler.net/lyrics/unreleased/jabberwock.html) either. :p
OK....Carry on.

I guess I'll jump in line behind boring mjc. HOWEVER,,, there be a story! My right brain-left brain dysfunctionality or whatever it is - caused me to enter dilsburger (I live in Dillsburg - get it? I knew that ya could... :p) with only one L.
So there you have it - my naming convention genius has been revealed and I only regret I did not have it copy protected.
JAB - sorry I've always addressed you as JABAR! Anyway, your posts are always a highlight whatever I call you. :D

For those who missed BB's thread...I realize pentachris was kind enough to link it...I'll save you the trouble of looking for mine! hehe
"Whew....well, because you asked...
When Solomon was given the chance to have his heart's desire granted...he chose wisdom.
At some point in time I came to the realization that what is often called "the pursuit of wisdom," is just that, a pursuit! (ARGH, and I thought I knew it all!) :(
I was looking for a moniker that represented my journey to be a wise man, rather than my arrival.
I loved it when my children were at that age when they questioned everything in their eagerness to learn! Their most oft used question was "why"? Thus, my first attempt was Whysman which was taken. So, I went with the phonetics and I'm now Whyzman, the seeker of wisdom!
My desire is to begin each new day's quest acknowledging there's a lot I don't know, or perhaps need to relearn. So, I'm reminded whenever I'm on line that I don't know it all (my wife already knows this)! Never be afraid to ask why (chutzpah)! :) And, my life's goal is to be able to display and incorporate the characteristics of a Man of Wisdom (especially to my children)! ;)
(addition) I'm also constantly reminded that with all the areas available on the Internet to explore, there are venues where a wiseman best refrain.
PS: I also found it helpful (really a necessity) to invest in kneepads! Asking my wife and children's forgiveness during the learning curve has wrecked quite a few pair of Dockers! :( ;) "
malcore

Well, my moniker comes from Tolkien.
Melkor or Morgoth Bauglir. It's also a play on the french "mal coeur", or "bad heart".
I loved the Tolkien books when I was a teenager(still do), and really dug Melkor wanting to sing his own song .
The "mal coeur" comes from an early overclocking experiment with my brother's computer that went awry.

And I used the first syllables of my names, strung together. Not original, but unique. The name of my lady magician in Baldur's Gate II. Predictably, beserker to me (and probably a whole lot of other folk) means Minsc. And miniature giant space hamsters. Zurke- this gives you a whole new flavor!
Now, if I were to borrow from Tolkien, (hmm, computer fan=Tolkien fan? :D) I would be Goldberry, River-daughter. Gee, an idea is born. Thanks, guys.
So, I am curious, jabarnutcase, what is so awful about multiple posts -? I don't mind new comments. Is it good forum etiquette to only post once in a thread?
Malcore - Melkor!?!! So, question: is the root of all evil really the desire to do it your own way? He was pretty human (ok, humanlike). I really like the mal coeur -fried cpu metaphor.
I've been reading Whyzman as "Whizzman". Oops. Dyslexia.

HeHe...Not at all Lisubie. In fact, there are many threads where multiple posts become necessary, as one question or comment leads to another.
Just figured in this particular thread, people might have been sick of hearing from me...(No comments necessary) :D
Oh, and GreenNV...Please tell me I don't really remind you of jar jar binks (http://www.mindspring.com/~ernestm/jarjar/deathtojarjar.html) !

Malcore - Melkor!?!! So, question: is the root of all evil really the desire to do it your own way?
Not necessarily. However, if one has the talent or ability to do it his/her own way, and is forbidden or restricted from doing so, then that talent may be directed towards other, less productive/more destructive ends.
Oooh, a little heavy. And dang, I posted twice!!

jabarnutcase "The first three letters are my initials. The rest is a brief description of my basic personality."
OK that gives us j a b and nutcase - but what's hiding behind the a and r - or maybe I am missing something - or maybe I am just a dim Brit.

Hey GreenNV...It's no problem, I was kidding with you too- Believe me, I've been called a lot worse! (Almost daily) :D
Pianorak, I am really not sure, but if I remember correctly, a friend of mine used to call me "j-bar" a long time ago, so I kept it and added the nutcase. Why he called me j-bar is beyond me...I think it was my first initial and the fact that we were often playing pool in the local "pub" at the time-("bar"). Hmmm- That may also explain why I can't remember correctly. :D
You could say: "jab you are a complete nutcase" too I suppose.
HeHe...Then again, maybe I was just in a hurry to sign up for this forum. :p

Boy WYZMN, had me going on that one...Sounded familiar (?) (http://jubal.westnet.com/hyperdiscordia/law_of_fives.html)
Now I'm really really sorry folks....My 6th and LAST post in this thread. :o
(Edit) An edit doesn't count as another post does it? Whew...Good. I see now that Chris mentioned the Law of Fives earlier...Should have been paying attention! :p
Sneaky how I snuck that 7th one in there huh? :D
saphalline
03-28-2003, 02:46 PM
I've had my screen name for quite some time, many years in fact. Started using it long ago when I would IM after school. Then I used it to post on another computer-related forum. Well, that one fell through when they "updated" their system. Turns out their "update" didn't like either my ISP or my system (well, actually parents' at the time).
So... since I could no longer post on that one, I spent some time being "lost"... until I found the PCG forums!! :D And all was well. ;)
The origins of saphalline were completely under my control, so I should consider myself lucky in that regard based on some of the stories the rest of you are telling! ;)
My birth-stone is actually emerald, but I like saphires better. Just the color really (even tho I know that most precious stones come in a variety of colors). Thus I have saphire.
The other part comes from the word crystalline, as in a crystalline matrix. I find the crystal's role in technology (and in other places) to be incredibly fascinating, and I can't help but wonder that we're not using the structure to its full advantage, either physically or conceptually. Thus I have crystalline.
Put them together and you have saphalline! :D That's me! Rather long-winded and perhaps not as haphazard or boring as others, but it's mine and wherever I use it, it seems to be unique... :p

Somehow saph...I knew that's exactly its derivation! ;)
Although, I'm a bit blue as I thought your explanation would be a bit more crystal clear...
And jabar, as far as I can determine, the Law of Fives says there will be a sixth and seventh, etc. As the Law of Fives only applies when it doesn't violate the Law of Fives! ;)

This has been fascinating and fun. But jabarnutcase's last link was enlightening. I always suspected that there was more to the "peace" sign than met the eye. The spaced-out hippies were just unsuspecting dupes; it was all about Fives. (The Roman numeral for 5 reminds me of the old joke: What is half of twelve? Seven, of course. Draw a line through the middle of XII and you have VII. Yeah I know: GROAN.)
LadyGrey
03-29-2003, 08:59 AM
Mine is the shortened form of Lady Grey Eagle, my Congo African Grey Parrot. I got her or rather she got me, when she was 14 weeks old. She will be 4 years the 29th of July. I've been one form or another of Lady Grey Eagle for the last 4 years. Yes, she talks up a storm and also thinks she is the microwave, the telephone, a cat, a dog, and a duck! She loves rock n roll and will yell rockin rockin rolllll specially when she hears Aerosmith. I'm teaching her to find the beat in songs. She can't clap of course but imitates the sound of clapping and is actually doing very well with it. Every morning when hubby goes to work she asks him, Pop Pop go to work? She pulled a good one awhile back, hubby came in the door from work and she yelled out Pop Pop Bozo!!I have no idea where she got that from. :D She has a summer house where she can sit outside in the shade in nice weather and has picked up all the wild bird calls. She has also taken to sounding like a siren here lately, too many detective shows I guess.:)
LG;)

Nice name!
I believe bad heart would translate "mauvais coeur" and "mal au coeur" would be a heart ache. Just a precision from a french canadian here. ;)
Take care all, and you're a bunch of funny people. I think I'll stop by sometimes...

:) Well, I guess I chose Gracious because it is how I try to be day to day. To try to be humble and kind and to just be a person that is there to help those around me. There are some days that I fail miserably but I don't give up in trying to be gracious ;)
