I've been having, (my friends been having) a problem for the past mmm... about a year and a half, although he hasn't had any serious problems until about a month ago.

The long and the short of it, his computer won't turn on. Much more complicated, it eventually turns on, but with repetitious mashing of the reset button. He and I have both been using computers since we could spell silicon, but we still can't figure out what's wrong.

He used to be able to turn on his system (year and a half ago) with a simple power on, wait, hit the reset once, and it's a go. This was okay for him, but resently, the problem has gotten worse. He now often spends a good half hour hitting the reset button until it finally turns on. He is getting very agitated by this and it's slowly driving him crazy. If that's not annoying enough, it get's better. Just about a half hour ago, when he and I were both playing DII:LOD. His computer blacked out and went into it's non-booting state, and since has had no luck turning it on. Here's his specs for your viewing pleasure, please help us!

- AMD K6/2 500Mhz
- 196mb PC133/100 (don't ask)
- Voodoo5 5500 PCI 64mb
- 40gb Western Digital
- 10gb Western Digital
- Tyan ???? Motherboard

- Anything else would be useless, but if you need something, I'll be on the net for a while, just ask. Thanks in advance, hope you can help us both.

Hi Fellow Cheesehead, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Not too sure where to start with this one, but it sounds like either a faulty power supply or power switch. You might check with your local computer repair shops to see if they have a new switch.

You can also check the voltage output of the power supply, but I am not qualified to tell you how. Hang tight for some more opinions.

Cheers,

Thanks, the power switch is something that has also crossed our minds, but we don't have the hardware here (extra switch, or case) to do it. I'm sure I can find one somewhere. Thanks again!

You have a double post going here. Go get yourself a new 300W power supply. That tired 250W can't pull what you've got plugged into it, had to much stress. Luck.

......Indecision may or may not be my problem......

Hi;

Agree with ranchdog. Especially if you have upgraded any components during this time period. As Scotty would say... "Captain, I've given all I've got, she can't take anymore..."

Even if you get a new power supply and find out it is the switch, you have the power to upgrade again if you want to. Check the AMD site and get a quality/recommended power supply. Believe me, it'w worth it!
