Hi guys-
OK- I'm having a serious brain cramp today. (I know what you're thinking- "What's he mean today!) " :D

Anyway, I've had an original copy of Norton AV on this computer for almost a year. I know this for sure as I am informed that my subscription will run out at the end of this month when I run "live update". No problem, I expected that.

This is the part I don't get. Back in November, I built another computer and installed NAV from the exact same disk.
I just checked and the subscription for that computer won't run out until Nov.2003 (A year after I installed it).

I don't remember the specifics of if and how I "registered" or what ever at the time for either computer.
How can this be? Is NAV uniquely identifying each computer and giving me a year from time of installation or what? IP's?

It sure wouldn't make sense if I could completely un-insall it from this computer, re-install and get another year.

Someone slap me a few times so I'll wake up.

Well, with as little sense as it makes, it is true that you would get another year if you could completely uninstall it from your computer and reinstall it. At least, that has been my experience with it. I reinstalled after a reformat and the clock started over again. I have seen that a couple of times now, so I know that it works. I am not sure I have actually tested it in real time though, since I usually get a couple of free after rebate copies each year.

When you do it, the seral number is the same, I beleive, Check it out under help, about NAV.

You are being unethical (and may be illegal) by installing the program a second time. Symantec doesn't have the capability to figure out that you have done tthis or they don't care enough or their not as greedy as MS...... But for what is costs for NAV, buy a copy. I never renew, I always look for a new version....

Thanks guys-
Boy...One of those days- Just typed a rather lengthly reply about an hour ago and my Broadband connection went down. Well, it's been a long time so I'll forgive them. :p

Anyway, first of all Classic...I agree about buying a newer version. As a matter of fact, I ordered one earlier this morning before I even noticed the subscription date on the other computer.

I was more curious than anything else. I was never intending to get something for nothing. Besides, some stuff I like the latest version too.
As official looking "live update" is when "verifying subscription status" and such, I guess I always (subconsciously at least), thought of it almost as something similar to windows update. (Yikes!)

An interesting note...The version # and part number#'s are of course the same on both computers. However, my account numbers are different- One includes my actual name- The other the "computer name".
Must have been something I did during registration or what ever. Makes sense.
It does seem though (as Budfred mentioned), that one could easily get a new subscription status inadvertently, due to a hard drive crash or whatever, causing a necessary re-install of the program.

It also seems to me I read in my user manual or their web-site that you could run it on more than one computer for home use- (Depending on subscription agreement). I'll have to look in to that again.

Thanks for the slap guys...I think I'm awake now. :D

Symantec has had various ways of allowing you to legitimately run NAV on more than one computer (but not other items like Ghost or SystemWorks), but I think they did away with that in the latest version, so now it is a copy for each machine.

It works - but of course you have much more to download to get up-to-date.
