View Full Version : much-asked cpu temp question

I know this has been asked several times, but I'll do it again. For my current system I first tried a Zalman 6000 and was getting temps in the high 40s C, (too high for my liking) no matter if I used an 80, 92 or 120mm fan. I wasn't thrilled with the Zalman anyway so I bought an SLK-800. I tried it with a 2050RPM Pabst fan and it is DEAD QUIET! However, the temps are around 44-47C. Am I being picky and should I be happy with the quiet? Are the temps acceptable as I don't game or overclock? Somehow I think I could do better, perhaps get into the 30's, without going the Delta route.

By the end of next week I'll have a 3900RPM adjustable Pabst as well as a 3250RPM Panaflo "high" (I have a 3-speed controller I can use with this one). I'll give them both a shot and compare notes.

What do you think?

What is your CPU?

20's...you must be using something exotic.

30's...great, or low speed (under 1 gig)

40's...acceptable, pretty much the norm

50's...getting a little iffy

60's...seek help

70+.....do you like regular or extra crispy?

If those 40's are under a load your in good shape
I wouldn't worry about it

I recently had a high temperature problem with a new P4 system which is posted in the CPU, Cases, and Cooling forum section.

My idling temps were in the low 40's, but the CPU would get to the warning temperature of 68C on booting some OS's, installing programs, or in large CD to memory transfer operations.

The basic problem was that the heat sink/fan assembly was not seated properly on the CPU when I initially installed it. I ended up replacing the heatsink compound with Arctic Silver paste carefully following their web instructions. The original heat sink tape/compound was probably OK if I had clipped in the heat sink properly. On the P4, there are 4 hard-to-see black plastic tabs that clip the sink/fan assy to the black plastic mobo sink/fan socket and 2 lever/clamps to apply even pressure between the sink and CPU. In my case one of the lever clamps was in the wrong position, which I discovered on disassembly. After correcting the problem, the idling temps dropped to 30-32C and never came close to the warning temperature again running full bore. ( I do not overclock)

Although you have not described your system, your high idling temps are so similar to what mine were; I thought I would mention my recent experience. You might carefully recheck your heat sink setup.

Sinch,

A 20 degree difference isn't really similar. If from the states has an AMD CPU, a reading in the high 40s is quite reasonable. You were saying your temps were in the high 60s on a P4.....

Installing programs etc hasn't brought them past 47C...so far.I think it's seated correctly; I used AS3. As far as instructions, lol, here were mine. You follow 'em:
The assembly gestalltet itself just as simply as with the standard Slk-800. after the foil of the base plate was removed and the processor core with thermal compound moistened, leaves one the 6-Punkt-Halteklammer in the base noses to engage. Subsequently, the radiator box is aligned centrically on the base. By means of slotted bolt turners finally the catch side of the fixing clip down pressed to these on the base engages. A strammer contact pressure develops, whereby a good waermeaufnahme is ensured. Although the additionally existing PU Schaumpads provides for a safe seat on the processor, the PC should very carefully be transported and/or the radiators before transport be developed.

That's priceless! I particularly like "slotted bolt turners". :)
