Hi
(1)I have an Asus A7V133 mobo & have checked on the Asus site that i can run an Athlon 1400 on it - I've upgraded the BIOS etc. When I run my Athlon 900 all is well. When I put in a Athlon 1400 all the fans whizz - all seems well - except that i get nothing at all on the screen & no beeps whatsoever. Is the CPU faulty (it is second hand) or am i supposed to have reset the CMOS. The board is jumper free.
(2) There is a little fan just below the CPU - it is marked as the VIA chipset on the manual hence I guess its a chipset cooler? This makes a racket! I reckon its on its way out so i bought one that I thought was the same from a computer fair (2.50p). But when i took the one of the mobo only the actually fan bit came out - a plastic casing was left in thus meaning i could not fit my new one. The remaining casing was securing by two sort of plastci pins that seem a bit spring loaded - am I supposed to be able to replace this fan?
Any advice is well appreciated folks.
Thankyou

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
For your first question: the CPU may indeed be dead. The only way I know to check is to install it in another known good compatible system and see if it works. If it works at all, the problem is likely to be your install. Did you install the heatsink/fan properly with the fan connected to the connector on the motherboard?
2nd question: Sorry, I don't have a clue what you are talking about. Hopefully someone familiar with that board will be along....

I run the same board on my main rig...:)
Back when I first put this setup together I spent considerable time on the ASUS Forums. There were considerable problems with the VIA chipset fans making noise.
One fellow had about 10 units assembled and out in the field. He began getting phone calls from clients...he was not a happy camper!
Mine began to make noise within a week. I requested a replacment from ASUS...which, they did send me...a duplicate of the one on the board...ARGH!
Needless to say, I passed on the obvious since we were well past New Years Eve, and ordered a Thermaltake Blue Orb. To install you need to remove the motherboard in order to collapse the expanded plastic pins currently holding the stock unit on there. I'm afraid I don't know of any other way to get the bugger off of there. :(
Hmmmm......The board supports up to 1.3Ghz, at least that's what the specs say...unless there's a BIOS upgrade that might accommodate??
We need a CPU guru for this one....;)

Thanks folks - a swifter response than i imagined - as you can see I'me new to these forums..
(1) Budfred thanks for the advice - I did have the heatsink/fan etc all in place & working - all was the same as when i had the original Athlon 900 in. I wasn't sure if this could be the problem - basically am i supposed to change any settings before switching the processors. I don't think I am...
(2) Whyzman - answered my query exactly - basically I need to take the board out to switch the fans! I thought that might be so...doh!

leefylee, I added to my previous post regarding the 1400 Athlon.
Where did you see that you could use this CPU on this board?

Yeah, you might want to clear the CMOS and give the BIOS a chance to re-adjust to the new kid on the block...

The BIOS should auto detect the CPU, whether you clear the CMOS or not.
Sounds like a second hand dead processor to me.
