Wow, there are an awful lot of them!!! Just goes to show how popular those fun little popup ads are... apparently they are so popular that several large hosting sites are now refusing to allow them on their pages. :D

Holy Shmoly!- Nice link(s). Glad I didn't miss this one...Some good info there.
Only problem is....Now I'm confused. Which one(s)to use? :p
Been using "Pop-Up Stopper" for quite a while. And that's when I remember (or bother), to enable it. Mostly, I try never to go back to sites that cause a pop-up fireworks display. And I run Ad-Aware...(and other stuff) frequently.

Guess I better get reading! :)

Had a Pop up Bug recently. It looked like Microsoft info notice (obviously was not). It read You have not debugged recently.Click on okay to proceed, and like a complete idiot I did so and wham, every thing just froze.I waited for a while and decided to stop the "De-Bug" then another little popup If you stop now your system will not be de-bugged. I battled to get my system to respond. I do not know where the thing has gone to it has not bothered me for a while. Any ideas

Sounds like you got hijacked... I would run a full security scan using an updated antivirus, spyware scanner and trojan scanner. You can get links to each of these through mjc's security link in his sig...

Thanx Budfred, have done a full scan with NAV, but could not find any thing, updated NAV yesterday.I do not have spyware or trojan, unless it is incorperated in NAV?

mjc
04-24-2003, 10:51 AM
NAV does scan for a few trojans and one or two spyware items...to rally know for sure you will need a dedicated scanner for each.

http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15179 is a list of links like the above but dealing with malware scanning.

Also you did not mention which version of Windows you are running...that will be helpful in determining if you can avoid these kind of messages.

I run Windows `98 extra, and recently have some problems with shutting down ie freezing when screen reads Windows is now shutting down

Budfred

I couldn't understand your last message. Have you done the spyware and trojan scanning yet. I would use Spybot and/or AdAware to check for spyware and it will also check for some trojans/hijackers. I would also use the trial version of Trojan Hunter (good for 30 days) to see if you have a trojan. You can get them through mjc's security link.

I think stefanus is trying to tell us that Windows 98SE is having shutdown problems. There's some help available for that here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q238/0/96.asp&NoWebContent=1). Although sometimes none of the microsoft fixes work.

Budfred

Trouble with shutdown is yet another symptom of hijacks/trojans, so the scanning is the first thing to do....

Budfred,Pentachris, I was replying to MJC`S Q. In answer to yours I have in NAV the following AVs:
Common
Program ie Trojans +- 365 off
Boot
Stealth
Polymorphic?
Multipartite
Macro
Windows
Malicious.
Every time I boot up an auto check is run. Also I have down loaded Trojan Hunt, run a scan. Result no Trojans detected. What else can be done, have not had the problem for two days, mabe whatever it is/was has realy buryied it`s self.

Did you also run a spyware scan. Spyware can cause the problems you described initially and wouldn't necessarily be picked up by Norton AV or Trojan Hunter....

stefanus

Budfred I have run various scans and have tried to down load spybot without success,it appears that it is another (Overworked and Underpaid forum)Q. What is Spyware and how and what can it do?

mjc

Simply put, spyware is software, usually installed bundled with something else, that tracks your web habits and reports that info toa third party, usually an ad agency.

This demographic data is very valuable to them and they make lots of money selling the info to advertisers so they can send you "targetted" ads.

The major problem with it is that it is, for the most part, extremely buggy software and often crashes, causes coneectivity problems, slows down machines, uses your bandwidth (internet connection) and so on...besides the privacy issues.

Hi stefanus-
Make sure you go to pepiMK's site HERE (http://security.kolla.de/) for Spybot S&D.

Also, don't know if you have used Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/) by Lavasoft, but that is very good too.
I use BOTH! :)

BTW- Ad-Aware's free version was actually recommended higher than the pay version in PCWorld...At least for this particular application. (Spyware)

I did notice the Spybot Site is slow right now...And I have a cable connection...Anyway, keep trying!
Good luck!

Another approach is to use Opera as your first or second browser since you can control popups from within the application.

Budfred
05-03-2003, 09:47 PM
Or Netscape 7 or Mozilla.... all let you control popups... I generally use Netscape 7 when I go to sites that I know use popups....

How does a popup killer differentiate between the windows you want to see and the popup adds?

Budfred
06-07-2003, 05:48 PM
I think there are some that will let you specify that it is ok to load certain windows, but most don't discriminate. They will block any popups that come along, even if you ask for them. I think most provide an option, like holding down the shift key to allow you to open a popup that you want....

Some insights here:- http://devedge.netscape.com/viewsource/2002/popup-control/

If popups are essential to the site then one would expect to be given an alternative method of opening them or of putting them into an allowed list of sites, just as is more commonly done with cookies.

Whilst browsing thro` the boards yesterday a window breifly flashed on and off on my monitor and I was disconected from the internet and other open windows where "White Out" and I could not close them down, ie OE and the PC-Guide forums. Eventually I had to shut down my PC via Ctrl/Alt/Del. Every thing had just hung up.

Someone recommended [and gave a link to] "Popup Manager".
Here it is http://www.endpopups.com/

It has been really good:)

It shows a little green bar at bottom left of the window that turns red when it blocks a popup.
You right-click on the red bar to view the popup and/or enable all popups on that site.

It has the characteristics I like:
It just works as it should with no input of effort.
So simple it's ridiculous.
Now and again I see a quick flash as a popup attempts to display and the bar turns red.

(But I still prefer Opera.)

Pop-ups you want are almost always opened on 'onclick' events (ie, you click a button).
Unwanted pop-ups are (again, almost always) loaded on page open or close (I forget the javascript event terms). So pop-up blockers just prevent those ones, whilst allow 'onclick' popups.

If you have a popup that is not being blocked by a good blocker, you are probably infected and need to post in this forum with your own thread asking for help... It would be a good idea to post a HijackThis log in that thread...
