Hi,

I am trying to install nt server 4.0. No matter what I do, I still get the 1024 cylinder error. The hard drive is a 40 gig, fresh from the box. I know there are many ways to work around the size issue, but I am stuck. I have tried the fdisk method and/or messing with the cmos, but failed, either I am doing something wrong or the computer was having a bad day.

By using the 3 floppys, I get the cylinder error at disk 3, and with just using winnt from the cdrom, right away I get the error about there is no where to put the files necessary for the installation.

I have thought of just putting the hd in a nt workstation system and using partition magic on it or even disk admin to at least get a fat 2 gig c: on it so I can get server installed.. anyone have any advice on this method or any others?

Any good advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jenn

Try first formatting your drive with only 2gigs of space in NTFS and after your install extend the drive using partition magic.

I like my operating system on one partition and my data on other partitions. Whenever I install WINNT4 I use the maximum harddrive allowable(I think it is 8Gig or is it 4Gig?) and start to install (using NTFS). After I finish installing, I download the SP5 (now I think it is SP6)from MS Website and run it. After I finish installing the SP5 the computer could see the whole drive.

I have not worked with NT server for over a year now but I think if you go to the disk manager, you would be able to see the whole drive and format it right there.

got it! whew... hope this info helps someone.. hopefully i didn't leave anything out below.
how to install nt server 4.0 on a new big hd.

boot to new/empty harddrive with a 95 or 98 startup disk.

1. use fdisk to create primary partition of 250 mgs. (1., 1. make sure you select "n" for the first question about large hard drives when you start fdisk.
2. set partition to active in fdisk.
3. created extended partition in fdisk for 1500 mgs.
4. reboot from 95 or 98 disk.
5. format c:
6.restart and make sure cmos settings are right...
i set cylinders to 1024, using chs, then i could change it to lba mode and it kept cylinders how i wanted them. leaving it in chs did nothing but give me an error of "can't find os".
7. install server from 3 floppies. still got 1024 error, but it allowed me to continue setup by pressing enter. If your hard drive paritions are right, it seems like one "little" cmos is what may be confusing people, like it did me.
8. nt should reboot to continue install. If you get to the reboot process (after cd rom install) and you get an "os not found" error, double check cmos settings for the lba and 1024 cyliner thing.

I hope this message helps someone..and thanks to everyone who was so helpful in resolving my harddrive problem.
