Hey guys,
Can anybody recommend some good search engines and any tips you can give me when submitting a homepage or site on the World Wide Web. Is there some harder to get hooked up with than others and how long does it usually take before it all comes into effect. Thanks so much for all your help.

From the previous misplaced thread:
Sorry, I have never tried to get a site listed anywhere, so I don't have a clue how it is to get on Google. They are the place that most geeks are likely to go though, so it may be worth it.
And a suggestion: this is a more suitable place for this thread, but rather than starting a new one, it is probably better to ask a moderator to move the old one.

From my experience, if you register your site with the major search engines, after a week or so you start seeing hits from them, and as time passes, other engines start appearing in your traffic logs.
I used to run a site for a steam museum, and had no problems just registering with google, yahoo, excite, and several of the other sites.
Which ones you choose depend on what your site is about, and which search engine your visitors are likely to use.
Whichever you choose, others will pick it up - I even had hits on my site from search engines I had never heard of!
BTW, some people say you should keep registering your site every month. I didn't, and kept the top spot on google and altavista for nearly a year!

I have been using submission 2000 since it came out. it submits to about 30 (I think) search engines (including google.) this WAS a free version, but having just done a search the latest
http://www.submission2000.com/submission.html
appears to be a trial version, but it looks like it is much improved, (so I may give it a go.)
have a look and see what you think (& how much it costs) it may be just what youre looking for.
I submit my site about every 4 -6 weeeks and remain mostly on first page of search engines (depending on search words) usually in first 6 places.
If you want the early free version I think I have it on disc so let me know & I will work out how to get it to you.
PS. have just checked & prices start at $69.95. (I think I will stick with the free version for now.) :)

You will need Irfanview to crop and resize pictures (free) and save them as JPG not bitmap witch are huge and would take your web page a long time to load.you will also need to contact you Internet provider and tell them you want to upload a web page ,so they can give you a user name and password (the user name and password is used in the FTP program to access the location of your potential web sight.).Try searching for this free web page program called 1st page 2000 (to help you make a web page.).You will need an FTP program to upload your web page like BulletProof FTP,Cute FTP,Fetch FTP,or WS FTP Pro.Also try searching for HTML templates to help start building your web page. You will also need a sight submission tool to let the search Engings know that your there like submit Wolf Pro,or Hyper hits,it take about 2 months for the search Engines to have you on there system.
