Greetings!:D
Ok, I have an existing system running win98se. I have just put together a new system and have a new WD 60gb hdd.
How do I get the data from the old hdd to the new hdd? I was thinking about putting the old hdd onto the new system but was afraid of the different bios on the new mobo. I didn't know if the old hdd would be looking for its old mobo settings and somehow get screwed up.
I thought about formatting the new hdd and putting it on my existing system as a 2nd hdd and then using Nortons Ghost to copy from my old hdd to the new hdd and then putting the new hdd onto the new system, but I was again thinking about the bios and the system settings and how they wouldn't be the same on the new system.
Any help would be great!
Thank you
Gracious:)

Put the old drive in the new system as the secondary master.
Copy the files you want and then remove the drive.

Thank you classicsoftware for responding so quickly!
Ok, so I put the old Hdd as the secondary master, got it, so here is what I need to have cleared up in this brain of mine, ready? ok:
First, on the new system with the new hdd, do I completely format this new hdd and go ahead and load it with win98se?
Second, once I have this new hdd set up this way and I put the old hdd as secondary master which already has win98se, will this cause any type of conflicts? Both having the same operating system?
This is where I get confused. What to load on the new hdd to use it as master while leaving the old hdd alone and putting it to secondary.
Since I will be putting the old hdd now as secondary master I do not need to change jumper settings, correct?
Also, what is the best way to use Nortons Ghost? Do I load the software onto the new hdd before putting the old hdd as secondary? Does it matter?
Sorry to be so dense, but I appreciate all of your help!!
:p

Your new hard drive should have come with software that will include a utility to copy from an old drive to the new one. I would use this utility and set up the new one that way. You boot it from the floppy drive, so you don't need to worry about which drive has the Win98 or any of that. You can then reformat the old drive and leave it in there or you can take it out and use it elsewhere.

"Your new hard drive should have come with software that will include a utility to copy from an old drive to the new one."
Budfred, that would be a negatory. It isn't brand brand new, to me anything I get is like brand new but it is a previously used hdd which has been formatted but not partitioned and without an operating system.
I just don't want my system to lock up or kill the old hdd and lose all the data. I am still confused on what the new hdd is suppose to have on it.
Do I still partition it like regular...and then go ahead and load win98se? Do I just partition it and not load an os? Do I partition, load win98se and put it on as pri.master and then put the old one just as it is (with win98se already on it...) and hook it up as sec. master? Will that work? No conflicts?
When do I load the Ghost thingy? Do I load it on the old hdd and run it from there or do I load it on the new hdd and run it from there? Do I set the cmos to boot to floppy first?
Can you tell how confused I am?
whew! That was a lot to say. Ok, am I making any sense here? Are you thinking apples while I am mumbling about oranges?
I apologize for my mumblings, thank you very very much! :(

I made the assumption that it was new, but the same suggestion applies. I would download the utilities from the drive maker, set them up on a floppy and use that...
You can either leave the new drive partitioned as is or repartition, depends on how you want to set it up. You will need to reformat either way if you want to start with a clean transfer from the other drive. If you use the maker's utilities, you can zero out the new drive which will clean it up completely, partition it, format it and use the drive transfer utility to move the old drive image to the new one. You would set it up as primary master before booting into the floppy with the utilities and the old drive as secondary master. Hope this sorts it out for you....
