As I have said before no need to flame, I've heard all before.
I am really glad baseball is back, even bought this deal through my cable company to get all the games. Living in Fla I needed to be able to get the YANKEES !!!

Goober, ya got that right, one can dream. Actually I like the cubs [Sosa] and my wife is from Chi, and a big Cub fan. I always win, she always loses, there is something in the symmetry of that.

HeHe- Way to go Mark...Always been a Bronx Bomber fan. (Gee- We agree on a lot of things)
It stems from growing up as a kid in the New York suburbs.
My kids were brought up in New Hampshire though. You should hear the fights I have with my son over the Red Sox!
I suppose I should add that I'm much more of a football fan....You should hear the fights I have with my son over the Jets and the Patriots! :p
Grew up when the Jets were still playing at Shea...Used to go down and see them play a lot. Namath, Richard Todd, the "New York Sack Exchange"- Woops! Showing my age again! :D

Me too, grew up with Namath etc. Not such a Jet fan anymore or football for that manner, I mean I still root for the Ny teams, but it's somehow not the same. Only baseball and golf [I play alot alot] seem to keep my interest. I know I am in the minority but, GOOOOO YANKEES !!!! P.S. I grew up in Brooklyn and Manhatten

I know the CUBBIES won't win it in my lifetime, but you have to admit they're the ultimate underdog! Would be pretty cool if they win:D
I like footballl better too, the Colts and Bears..boyfriends a Lions fan but I still love him!
Like your symmetry:)

Here's hoping the Expos can make some noise this year.
pentachris
04-04-2003, 10:17 AM
The Expos have made some noise - at the Braves expense. First time since 1988 the Braves have opened 0-3, first time since '91 the Expos have swept a series against the Braves, and (this is most incredible to me) first time since '92 the Braves have been shut out in back to back games.
Come on Bravos, you can do better than that!
And how well are the Yankees going to do with their golden boy out of commission for a month (at least)???
Mark Miller

Your right the Yanks could be in trouble with Jeter hurt, instead of winning 125 games they'll win 120.
GO YANKEES!!!!

Nu-uh the louisville bats are going all the way;) . Sorry actually they're just a minor league team for the Cincinnati reds:rolleyes:. I am a reds fan however they loose almost every game and still manage to pull off a big new ballpark this season. Same with the bengals. They suck and they just got a 5billion dollar new stadium. I wonder what the patriots new stadium will look like if they get one?:D Who i think will win it all ........... (insert the team you want to win here)
--there no negative feedback from anyone ... it's all positive because it's the team you want.:D

I went to college in Louisville and I didn't know they had a minor league team, of course this was the beginning of the 70's, maybe they didn't have a team. Go Cards [Louisville]
GO YANKEES!!!!!

Nice to know that someone at least knows of louisville. Most people are like, "Louisville? Louisville what?". GO CARDS! And they/ve had the redbirds (farm team for St. Louis...they were horribly bad) and now the Bats (Cincinnati reds) The Bats won the minor league championship/league/tournament whatever it was they had they were #1.

Had you heard of the Finnish version of baseball. My American friends say there's a lot more happening during the game. Finnish baseball is played in Estonia, Sweden, Germany, Finland and some other countries.
The rules are here: http://pesisnetti.pesis.fi/17

GO GEEKS
LOL @ budfred....what a hoot!!!! Just because you aren't into sports does not make you a geek!!!!! I mean what does it mean about me being a female who goes ape over football, where my neighbors can hear me screaming all the way down the block? To each his own. If you ever want to know the real differences between football and baseball read what George Carlin had to say about it :D :D :D :
************************************************** *******************
Baseball is different from any other sport, very different. For instance, in most sports you score points or goals; in baseball you score runs. In most sports the ball, or object, is put in play by the offensive team; in baseball the defensive team puts the ball in play, and only the defense is allowed to touch the ball. In fact, in baseball if an offensive player touches the ball intentionally, he's out; sometimes unintentionally, he's out.
Also: in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and all sports played with a ball, you score with the ball and in baseball the ball prevents you from scoring.
In most sports the team is run by a coach; in baseball the team is run by a manager. And only in baseball does the manager or coach wear the same clothing the players do. If you'd ever seen John Madden in his Oakland Raiders uniform, you'd know the reason for this custom.
Now, I've mentioned football. Baseball & football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values.
I enjoy comparing baseball and football:
Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.
Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.
Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.
In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.
Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who's up?
In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.
In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.
Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.
Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.
Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.
Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.
In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.
And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:
In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!

Whoaaaaaaa....now I never said I didn't like hockey! I grew up in Madison, WI and use to watch Bob Johnson's Badgers kick the butt out of everybody!! Wow, what a penalty killing team he had, never saw so many short handed goals in my life. "Sieve, sieve, sieve, sieve".:)

gracious,
I was not into sports long before I was a geek... I am quite proud of my geekiness, although I am somewhat embarassed that I am only an amateur with all the pros around here. In my own tangible community, I am valued equally with most professional geeks though....:)
I just have never cared about pro sports and as they have gotten to be more and more of a drug enhanced profession that blackmails communities into building them a place to do their business, I have become more opposed rather than simply uninterested. I do like playing some sports however.

In fact, in baseball if an offensive player touches the ball intentionally, he's out; sometimes unintentionally, he's out
Ahh you are partially right gracious. I play baseball myself and if you touch/are touched/hit by the ball INBOUNDS he is out. That is why the third baserunner stands slightly out of bounds so if he is hit by the ball he won't be out. I figured this out by watching a rookie in his first game (I forgot who it was but it was last season) he DIDN'T stand slightly out of bounds and he got hit by the ball inbounds and was called out. Of course he was angry and threw a fit in the dugout. Then the question in who wants to be a millionare for $32000 was "If a player is hit by the ball he is out unless_____"
A.) He throws a rage and fights with the umpire
B.) He is out of bounds
C.) He is hit above the waistline
D.) He isn't out nomatter what there's no such rule
Well the girl lost because she thought there was no such rule. Just a bit of trivia you never know when it'll come in handy.;)
I am also kinda proud of my geekiness. Whenever someone tells a person I hold in high regard that I am a computer geek I say why yes I am. And several times the other person says, " Hey well so am I what system you got?" That makes the person who was trying to embarras me or make fun mad. Can't wait until high school.
gracious
04-10-2003, 11:13 AM
Budfred-You know I was wondering at what level of computer genius do have to be at before you can be considered a Geek? Am I a geek? Am I a wanna be geek? Am I a Geekette? Where did that word come from anyway? Hey great for a new thread, How Geeky are you:) Anyway I had many friends in highschool who were considered Geeks but if you spent any time with them you would be in awe at how knowledgeable they truly were and how you just knew that these were the people who most would likely find the cures to cancer....
And......drug enhanced profession that blackmails communities into building them a place to do their business
Well not in Green Bay!! The Packer's are owned by the city for the city and is a very established institution.

Mark Miller,
I just posted a big banner celebrating geekiness, how much less serious do you want me to be???:D

The way the forum works is that you get to be a geek with your first post! I believe your are named a neophyte or novice geek with the first post....

Budfred: Yes I see, and I have noticed that I have been promoted to the printer icon and am currently a geek disciple! :)
http://www.pcguide.com/vb/images/ri_printer.gif
But would that cut the mustard if I was sitting face to face with Bill Gates? Would he see through me? :(
Oh btw, I found out where the word Geek came from, you don't want to know.:) Of course the .com age has transformed this word to a new heightening of reality! Of course being a geek is entirely different than being a nerd isn't it?:D

Wow, he looks like my old chemistry teacher, right down to the finger thumb thingy he is doing and The Hair!:D

04-10-2003, 02:42 PM
Yeah, the origin of the word geek is not a nice one, but then the origins of many words aren't so nice. The current meaning varies depending on who says it. I see it as a mark of distinction, many still see it as more like the Nerd.... :p
