My computer froze during Office 2000 update. When I rebooted Win 2k keeps rebooting my system halfay through Win 2K bootup. I get a blue screen that flashes real quick before each reboot. I finally managed to determine what the screen says... it says something to the effect that there is a problem with the registry.... having to purge from memory...etc I can't get Win 2k to bootup fully.
I think the only thing that I can do now is to reinstall everything from scratch. This same thing happened a few days ago and I ended up having to reinstall everything. The first time it happened, my system had not been overclocked (However, I did have the RAM cache latency (CL) at 2; my RAM is supposed to support that.) This time around it was overclocked ( FSB:155, Multiplier: 8x; these were the only settings that I changed on my Iwill KK 266-R mobo and 1 Ghz 266 AMD). I did reset all this in the BIOS and reboot... no luck.
I think I should just avoid overclocking... even though I don't think that's the problem... afterall this same thing happened despite it not being overclocked the first time)
I have 20 GB Western Digital Caviar drive. How should I pattion it when I attempt the next reistall.
1) Would partioning preven this problem?
2) Is there anything I can do to recover the system without having to reinstall overything again...?
3) Should I increase VIO or the core voltage to present this from happening again? If so, which one should I change?
I did run the Win 2k repair console... CHKDSK did detect errors (these were not present when I checked the disk 2 days ago) on the bootdisk. I reran CHKDSK with the repair option turned on... it said that the disk was checked and repaired...
Thanks,
