That's kind of an open-ended question. Naturally it depends a lot on what the PC is going to be used for and the O/S it's running. Average use, a little surfing, a little game playing, not much need in more than 256MB. At that stage 128MB works fine. IMHO anything that needs above 256MB is hard core serious business.

Anything above 256mb for Windows 98/ME or 512mb for Windows 2000 won't make much of a performance difference...

My OS is Win98SE and I do use lots of graphic programs and the net for work. Right now I have 192 MB RAM on board. Perhaps it would be a good idea to get a new stick...

I have an AMD Athlon 650 running win98Se. I am on the net eight to ten hours a day with cable modem and sometimes I watch movies on this computer. I have only 64MB of RAM and it is working fine. I think about adding more memory everytime I look at newspaper ad (256MB PC133 at $35.00), but then why.

A Lot will depend on what Graphics programs and what type of graphics you work with.
Simple 256 color graphics for web use won’t require much memory as ziba noted.

But if you are using large graphics (Photos ) the extra memory won’t hurt.
Using win98 with 512 meg and working with true color graphics works well for me.

The larger your graphics the memory you will want.
You should also look at the amount of free ( Physical )memory you have available after starting your graphics program.
Then open your largest graphic file and check it again.

Depending on the program and how it handles backups on original files after editing you may find the amount you have will work.
If however your program stores the original in memory for Undo purposes you will fill your memory very fast and suffer a slow down with disk swapping.
