I'm running a crossover cable on two Window XP Pro comps. When I'm surfing the web on the second computer (not the host comp) I can't seem to close out the Browser when I'm done surfing the web. Nothing seems to be froze up, everything works fine, I can even minimize the browser window, but it just won't close. This only happens to the second comp, not the host comp. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Mil

You can try to uninstall and reinstall IE.

(Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components)

Hope this works.

It almost sounds like there are some system policies in effect...try starting the System Policy Editor and seeing if there are any on the affected machine.

Have you run security scans and do you use a firewall??? I would run antivirus, spyware and trojan scans, particularly the trojan scan. It could be that you have a trojan that is using your connection and that is somehow blocking shutting down your browser.

If that doesn't work, I would go with using IEradicator to completely remove IE and then try a reinstall.

I just ran a Trojan Remover and it found none.........also I do have a free downloaded firewall called "Tiny Little Firewall" but I have it disabled. How do I run a System Policy Editor ?
Thanks,
Mil

XP is different, you cannot repair it from add/remove like other versions of win. if you put in a search "repairing internet explorer 6" you will come up with a MS knowledge base article on 2 ways that might work. I did the first which was start-run -sfc /scannow-ok. Make sure there is a space between sfc and/. Also after the reboot you will probably have to reactivate win XP [easy]. If you have the disk fine, if not look on the side of your tower for product key. This worked for me. There is another way which is a registry hack.
I hope if all the other suggestions don't help that this does.
Mark:)

I just tried the sfc /scannow option, and at this time everything seems to be working. I'm assuming that this fixed some corrupt files within IE.
Thanks for the feedback,
Mil
