Have been asked to set up a LAN for friend and have very little experience here (so what else is new I hear you ask :D)
It will initially be for 2 comps (win98se)
And then for 3 comps (2x win98se & 1 XP) when up and running.
On the Xp setup, Xp will be the main operating computer.
Which is the most secure to setup a Lan with? TCP/IP or NET BUI or do I have to set up for TCP?

I would use TCP/IP since XP doesn't use netbeui by default. Both protocols can use netbios for windows networking, however, netbeui is the more "chatty" of the 2 protocols.
This article explains how to add netbeui to XP (if you wish to still use it):

Thanks.
When you say Net Bios is the more "Chaty" does this mean that it is more sicceptable to "Leaks".
If there is no difference in security issues I will stick with TCP (easier for me as well)

You need TCP/IP if you want to access internet and is reliable.
NetBEUI is faster but is only for your LAN.
If you want, you can install NetBEUI for XP from the installation CD
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=301041
and setup NetBEUI over TCP/IP (Advanced properties of your Network card)
Hope this helps

heheheh....it took me some time to tell the difference between Netbeui and Netbios.
Anyway....Netbeui simply sends out more broadcast network traffic than TCP/IP. Security wise netbios is netbios no matter what protocol you use to "run" it, so the security concerns are much the same.
