I'm running Windows 98 on my now ancient K6-2 300......when I click on the "my computer" icon, the flashlight graphic just keeps looking and looking....I can run most applications, but some do hang up, butI don't think it's a hard drive failure issue.....I'm about to start a clean boot and/or uninstall lots of things.....any ideas?...something in the registry?
Does this happen everywhere ther is a My Computer icon or just the desktop?
Does it happen if you right click on it and select open?

Hi,
What changes have you made recently? Installed any software and/or hardware?
The flashlight thing usually happens any time you have made a significant change to the system. It has to "update" itself, so to speak.
Let us know the events that took place prior to this.
Cheers,

Just a REMINDER...........when you "Clean up" a hard drive and it's a Win program you are cleaning up..........ALWAYS Uninstall rather than delete or you will get errors galore.

Try this: Boot up with your bootup disk and run "scandisk" to check your Harddrive for any lost clusters or crossovers.

scandisk did not find any trouble....I also tried a "clean boot" and the problem still occurs...the disk defragmenter does not work, and freezes up, so I can't defrag...I recently installed McAfee anti virus software, and a cdrom burner, and I don't know if this was the cause....the computer worked fine until recently.....

If it were my computer I would uninstall McAfee immediately [DONT DELETE IT...uninstall it] and see what happens. McAfee can cause LOTS of problems....if I were going to get ANY anti virus software it would be Norton Antivirus 2001......its the only one I've seen that doesnt cause all kinds of problems and it updates the virus patterns automatically [a must if you really want some protection]. I use Trend Micro antivirus online protection and it works fine for me and it's free.
