Opening XPpro in safe mode?

Can anyone out there tell me how to open XP pro in safe mode?

Thanks for your help. I am aware of the F8 key unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. This could be because I am not pressing it at the right time due to a rather drawn out start up process. I have therefore posted another question about the start up process.
