I want to sell my old desktop computer but am not sure what it's worth. It is a Compaq, about 5 yrs old but was recently upgraded with more memory, graphics and a pentium processor. It is a stand-up hard drive and floppy drive. Brand new 19" monitor, new keyboard, 2 external speakers and mouse. It is Windows 98 complete with Microsoft Office 97, EA Championship Manager, Encarta 96, various games and clipart. It has Internet Explorer but no modem, dvd or cd-rw.
Could anyone help me with how much I should sell for?
I would be very grateful.

Hi Brian's Girl....And welcome.

One thing you might try, is to find a comparable system on eBay (http://pages.ebay.com/index.html) and see what they generally seem to be going for.

Maybe refine your search Here (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResult&query=compaq&from=R8&ht=1&st=2&category0=293&Top10=&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&catref=C1) , and keep your eye on things for a while.

hi jabs,

agree with you totally to look at prices on e-bay, but as brians girl is in L-pool it would be better on uk site here

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/computer-index.html

not forgetting that there is p & p on systems of around £20 - £30
so for a final asking price I would suggest e-bay price plus about £50 if selling locally with a view before buy. also look in the local rag, chronicle, buy sell etc.

systems on e-bay going for around £50 - £60 are advertised locally for £100 plus. and I'm not far away from Liverpool.

(I have sailed up & down the mersey a few times.) ;)

Around me the better way to sell a system like that would be to sell it without the monitor...the monitor is actually the more valuable part and you could probably get a better price by selling it stand-alone.

Thanks Vic...Sould have noticed Brian's Girl was across the lake. ;)
And mjc brings up an excellent point about selling the monitor separately.
The "brand new 19 monitor" is definitely the best part of the deal.

Unfortunately, in the computer world...(Even with the upgrades), 5 years can be an eternity and the value drops pretty fast!

Thanks for all your help. I sold it for £120.00 with the monitor.

Last I heard of the exchange rate, that would be about $180, which seems low to me taking the monitor into account....

£120.00 = $191.00
Definately too low. Second hand 15" monitor about £40.00.
Second hand 19" monitor about £100.00

Hi Ernie-
Like the currency converter....Bookmarked- Thanks! ;)

To bad the shipping would have been so high....Might have bought the monitor myself! :p

Haven't actually handed it over yet, think I should cancel?

That probably depends on what type of agreement you have to sell and how much you honor your agreements. It is likely that the person buying is getting a really good deal on the monitor, but if you made a formal agreement, you may be stuck. It might be worthwhile to take the lower amount just to be done with it too....

Not a really formal agreement, just a friend of a friend of a friend sort of thing. Know what you mean about getting rid of it though, it would mean a quick sale.
I think i'll sell, i didnt pay for monitor and it is just cluttering up my house.
