I have run out of space on my tiny (1GB) IDE drive and would like to switch to using my much bigger and faster SCSI drive as the boot drive. Will my bios need upgraded etc? what are the primary considerations?
Any help much appreciated.

My drive is IBM DNES-309170W.
Motherboard is GA-5AA super 7 mainboard.
SCSI controller is SIDE 2936UW.

Cheers.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

I am not that familiar with SCSI drives, but I think the issue is the same with IDE. The simplest way to do this would probably be to remove the IDE and install your OS on the SCSI drive. I would probably wipe the IDE drive before removing it and when you reinstall use fdisk from a Win98 Startup boot floppy to repartition it or simply reformat it. Windoze should automatically establish the SCSI drive as the boot drive if it is the only one with an OS handy when you boot without the IDE. You might want to wait for other responses before you proceed to make sure I didn't miss something though...

Ooh, that's funky. A BabyAT mobo with onboard SCSI. Don't know if you need a BIOS update to boot from the SCSI drive, it should be an option in the BIOS labeled "boot order" or something like that. I've seen so many ways in various BIOSes of changing boot order that I can't help you with that. However, for your reference, here's (http://tw.giga-byte.com/english-web/products/ga5aa.htm) the webpage for your mobo.

Last BIOS that Gigabyte made for your mobo was unfortunately a beta version (F7b) on Oct 25, 2000. *blech!* Not much chance it'll ever be updated beyond that  but it might be worth a shot - as long as you also DL the BIOS below it (F6) so that you can move to a known good BIOS should the beta one not work.

Might want to also update your chipset drivers from ALi (M1542 & M1543C). Try here (http://www.ali.com.tw/eng/product/corelogic/m1543c.htm) and see what you can find.

thanx for the info. From what I have worked out so far I should be able to do what I want but I'll come runnin' if I get stuck!
