i would like to zero out my maxtor hd.with the ex. would i have to disconnect the wd hd to do this? i have xp installed on it,and i would like to change master/slave around since the wd special ed is 80 gig and the maxtor is 60.

If you want to be safe, then yes it would be a good idea to disconnect the drive you don't want to zero out.

Do you have to? No. Most software will let you select the drive you want to zero. If you select right, you'll be OK.

If you use Maxtor software to do the zero out, it will only work with the Maxtor drive (I believe).

Thanks Budfred i think you are right. after zeroing out do i need any drivers.it s a byo system.will use xp pro disk

You will just need to repartition and reformat assuming that your BIOS can autodetect...
