I have just put w2k on 2nd partition and it lists my CD rom as J & my RW as K. which is opposite to the way they are on w98se which is on my 1st partition.

also when I put a CD in it auto loads then asks for the CD to be put in, so put in other drive but that's the same.

eg. if I put it in CD rom (J but listed as K) it autolaods and the screen comes on (Soundblaster live tour used) click on tour and it asks for CD to be inserted. same happens on other drive and if I change drives midweay through makes no difference.

I cannot find anywhere to change drive letters and have already un-installed & re-installed the drives.

In Device Manager there should be an option to select a range of drive letters to use for the drives. Pick the same as the beginning and end of the range. So if you want "J", you set the beginning "J" and the end "J", so the machine is forced to name it "J".

Also, Win2K probably uses different drivers for the optical drives so if it is not just the default drivers that came with Win2K, you may have to download updates.

Have you tried going into Control Panel/Admin Tools/Computer Managment/Disk Managment, right clicking on the CD-ROM and assisgning a new drive letter further down the alphabet.
