i have a amd 1.4gig with a gigabyte ga7vtx MB. (via chipset)
i have had a lot of trouble getting this system up and running but just when i thought it was all over, my usb ports won't respond. I get "can not communicate with device" errors. I'm using all the latest drivers for my joystick and nothing. and i can't get a signal from my scanner either. any help would be appreacited.

Loki, you probaly don't have your USB ports enabled in your bios' Try rebooting or starting and access your bios "del, ctrl, whathave you and it should be under chipset features and just enable it " plus or minus key and see what happens
i should have mentioned that they are enabled in the bios. i'm looking now to see if there is a jumper mabye that i need to change.

loki-- If my failing memory serves me correct M$oft has a patch that can be downloaded at thier website to correct the USB problem. Also, you might go to the Gigabyte website and browse thru their FAQ section, etc. as solutions for problems like these can often be found there. Luck. ------------
......Indecision may or may not be my problem......

hi;
This is not an unusual problem with the via based chipsets. I would make sure that you have the latest via 4in1 drivers loaded and also download the "USB filter" at the website. This corrected the same problem on my machine.
Oh, by the way, there is also a problem with the Sidewinder Joystick in some via systems. Look through the viatech site for the patch for this problem, IF you have a Sidewinder Joystick.
Finally, go to start/settings/contol panel/system/Device Manager
Make sure that "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" is the last entry in the window, just under "sysetm devices."
Almost forgot, some devices, such as a scanner, will only work correctly if they are directly connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the system. In other words, if you have a USB mutiport hub connected, some of these devices don't always like the hub. They demand individual attention!

Ok, i got the filter from the via website....nothing.
there is no sidewinder patch on the gigabyte site or the via site, and microsoft is oblivious to the problem unless it involves the force feedback. Is it possible that my usb ports are bad??? and ideas would be helpfull, i only want to return my board if it is absolutly nessary.
Thanks in advance for the help.
I have checked the via website and the gigabyte website for patches or faq's and found nothing. mircosoft seems to be oblivious to the problem unless it envolves the force feedback joystick. If anyone could suggest anything else for me to try i would apreaciate it. I only want to return my board if it is nessesary.
thanks for your help.

Hi;
Did you try this Microsoft link? It speaks to via based chipsets and AMD processors over 350 mhz. Are you running win98SE?
