Recently I installed the new MSN messenger through windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I noticed there was another item which was 23 megs called new microsoft .net framwork version 1.1 but didnt download it cause its too big as I'm on a 56k modem. Now when I go and try to run MSN messenger it says connecting failed cause the service could not be found. Is this because I haven't go the updated .net framework???

I suspect the .NET thingy was a SDK (Software Development Kit) and not needed.
Try uninstalling (if MSN will ever let you uninstall it) and/or try the download again.
... and check the configuration options, which I s'pose might have, though shouldn't have, been changed.
I'm not entirely sure about that, Paul...I know MS is moving to make .Net framework required, how soon and if any of the newer "add-ons" that are out now (latest updates) are requiring it is what I am unsure of....but it will be in the near future (at least for 2K and up).

mjc - on the button as usual.
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1
Download size: 23.1 MB
The .NET Framework is a feature of Windows. Applications built using the .NET Framework are more reliable and secure. You need to install the .NET Framework only if you have software that requires it. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. The SDK is 270MB !!
Microsoft .NET Framework Software Development Kit

But MSN Messenger doesn't need it. I upgraded version 2.2 on a virginal ME installation to version 5. Rebooted and went back to Windows Update (which I normally go nowhere near) and the .NET Framework version 1.1 was still on the list of things I "needed" to download. The updated version of MSN Messenger was working just fine.
If it needs to be uninstalled and doesn't appear in the Add/Remove Programs, it may be in the Add/Remove Windows components (depending on your OS) from which you could uninstall and then try reinstalling it.
