Could someone please list the pros and cons for a flat crt vs lcd.
Thanx for helping me decide.

CRT
1. for the foreseeable future, a better picture.

LCD
1. slim, lightweight design.
2. larger screens, as I cannot imagine placing a 21" CRT on a desk.
3. less power consumption.

All I can think of.

You will get a lot of debate on this. I think my LCDs have the best pictures that I have ever had. I use LCDs at home and a CRT at work. The CRT is fuzzier and it sure is a lot bulkier, a real pain in taking desk space. The main advantages that I have heard of for CRTs is that they are better able to handle games and, of course, they are currently a lot cheaper. I wouldn't go back, but I am not a gamer....

Lcd's will last longer. Because of the way the gun works to shoot pics in a crt, after awhile they slowly get out of alignment. which really can't be fixed. An lcd the backlight might go after 30,000 hrs but easy to fix. Besides that an lcd will look exactly the same until the day it dies.
As Bud said the picture is much better on lcd. the new ones let you change resolution without losing clarity.

A related question - what are the benefits of a "flat" crt vs a 'normal' crt?

A flat CRT gives you some of the benefits of an LCD with not distorting the picture, but it still is fast for gamers and cheaper than LCDs. A normal CRT has more distortion near the edges of the screen.

Oh, another advantage of LCDs, my 17inch screen actually gives me the same basic screen area as a 19 inch CRT...

Wow! Does that mean that a 19inch flat crt (which I have ordered) will be equivalent to around 20 or 21 inches on a 'normal' crt?

No, it means that if you ordered a 19" LCD it would be equivalent to about a 20" or 21" CRT. The flat CRT is still going to have less than 19" of screen that it says it has. This is because CRTs don't go all the way to the edges of the screen, so the diagonal measure is never an accurate measure of what you see, but it is on LCDs....

Actually on flat screen crt's it is even less, because there is always a border around the flat pic, sort of the same as flat screen tv's

CRT:

Cheaper/easy to clean/better for games/better at lower resolutions or with cheaper/older video cards, take up a lot of real estate.

LCD:

More expensive/more difficult to clean/not as good for gaming/better at higher resolutioins or with newer/better video cards, great space saver.

There you have it.

If you are NOT a hard core gamer and you have a video card that will perform well at higher resolutions and you can afford it, get the LCD you will not regret it. If you are a hard core gamer or have an older system with an older video card or don;t have the funds, get a CRT

My son is big on new gizmos, so when I wanted a flat screen CRT, he was pushing me big time to get an LCD instead. I just want to add that when I was "researching" and wandering through stores looking at monitor displays, I was struck by the difference in "color" between the CRTs and the LCDs, and more importantly, on some LCDs, the pic was only clear from the front. If you looked at it from the side, it was nasty. I have heard that they're better now, but I would make sure that you get a chance to "see" the LCD you're interested in on display. I thought I wanted the Samsung flat screen until I saw it on a Best Buy display. It's entirely possible that it was mis-set in the store, and the store clerk came over and fooled with it, but it was still the worst display in their monitor section. So, ended up buying a Phillips instead and have been happy with it. And, to be honest, I really haven't noticed that much "difference" between my old monitor and the new except for size of monitor (new much bigger).

on some LCDs, the pic was only clear from the front. This is an important aspect of LCD monitors. There is such a thing as a 'viewing angle' - the maximum angle (from directly in front of it) that you can reasonably see the image, which can be different horizontally & vertically. It's simply because of the way an LCD works, which is entirely different from a CRT.

make sure that you get a chance to "see" the LCD you're interested in on display.Very good advice, for any type of display or TV that you want to buy. What I consider to be a good quality picture and what someone else would consider to be a good quality picture can be two very different things.

Also note that most modern video cards can support a CRT monitor and an LCD monitor at the same time. While still expensive and a bit 'techie', multi-monitor PC's are becoming more common. It's great to be able to use a CRT for gaming and an LCD for all other work! :D Er... so I've heard. :p Must get me one of those 15" LCD's that are so cheap these days!
