Hello everyone. I am using Internet Explorer 5 and running Windows 98. I cannot seem to be able to view pages offline. I have tried with all the webpages I have visited, but to no avail. I have not had this problem before. Is there a setting somewhere to enable this option?

Also, a friend of mine will be buying a PC. We have the choice of either opting for Windows 98 or Windows ME. But we have heard that Windows ME was quite temperamental. Is this true? Any suggestions as to which one of these two Operating Systems is better? Thank you.

Hi;

I see your are using win 98. I have ME, but you can find info via the help menu. Go to start/help and the index. Type in "viewing" and look for the section on viewing pages offline. My ME help file states the following;

"viewing offline, you can view them offline by using the following procedure.

Before you disconnect from the Internet, on the Tools menu, click Synchronize.

When you're ready to work offline, on the File menu, click Work Offline.
In your Favorites list, click the item you want to view."

In terms of buying a new system with win98 or ME, I know some folks on this site have a preference for Win 98. I have ME and it has always ran fine, on my self built machine.

If you are bying a preconfigured system, ME has been tested on it and should work fine, provided you have a system with at least 128 mg ram, and you don't plan on fiddling around like we do with tweaking settings and such.

Since Win 98 has been around longer, it's tested and more stable. Make sure that if you choose 98, that it is the SE version, where most of the bugs have been worked out. You can always upgrade to ME later, if you chose to do so.

Well that's my take on it - good luck!

I have used ME on several different systems, some preinstalled, some self-built and I have never had any problems with it that I didn't have with 98...in fact, in my experience, ME was slightly MORE reliable than 98...

That said, you will probably get a deluge of "ME haters" posting...

Well, I am somewhat in the "ME Haters" camp, but it does have its uses...and some of its worst features can be tamed or shut off, it does offer some improvements/updates to 98 but I just don't think that it is worth paying for...if you have 98 don't buy ME, if you are buying a new machine, yeah ME may be ok, just don't expect it to be significantly improved from 98...and if you have a bunch of older DOS based apps (mostly games and some business software) 98 may be the better choice. Also, ME seems to like more RAM than 98...128MB minimum (yes it will run with less than that but it will be incredibly slow)

Thank you for your advice ladies/gents. I'll pass the information on to my friend. As with viewing the pages offline, I'll give it a go. Thanks Danleff.

Hi Pikefish;

Good going. Just don't tell anyone that I use WIN ME on my two systems!

I love it when a plan comes together!
