I am having a problem using Windows update. It begins a scan and just stays at 0% done forever. Looked for an answer on the technet site by MS but couldn't find anything close.
I have a P4 1.7ghz
384mb ram
running XP home
Was able to do updates back when I first built this box but now it won't scan my system to see what I need.
Just wondered if anyone came across this before?
Thanks, GMC

1).If you have a firewall disable it.
2).If you use AOL, minimize AOL and open Internet Explorer and try
Windows Update.
3)."JScript.dll" make sure it is current or the proper version.
4) check your system date and time

Thanks for the replies.
Ernie the page you wanted me to read is, suprise suprise , not available but thanks anyway.
Yoda, 1. firewall disabled, hell removed it.
2. No AOL here, am using IE 6
3. jscript.dll version 5.6.0.6626 has now been replaced with version 5.6.0.8513. Fixes security leak.
4. System date and time are fine.
Still not working. :(

Have you by any chance, disabled the "automatic update"
or any other dependent background services?
For more information on enabling or disabling the win xp
services,go HERE (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm) .The gold standard on win xp services.
Hope this helps.

Shanmaga, thanks for the suggestion. I checked and I did have the auto updates turned off. Started them up and managed to get all the critical updates. Then after restarting my system I went back to get the XP updates and the driver updates and the same thing is happening. The scan just sits at 0% and doesn't move. Rechecked to make sure that there were no changes to the services with the restart and there weren't any.
Now I'm really getting confused.

Try the following steps,
1.Clear out all Temp Internet Files/Cookies/History.
2.Check your event log for any clues on what happened when you restarted.
3.Does your current security settings prohibit you from running ActiveX plugins? The Windows Update stuff runsoff of an activex plugin.

right-click internet explorer icon>properties>settings>view objects>update class>right-click>properties
this is the active-x client control for your windows update
when you right-click properties, delete is an option
I would delete this controller, and return to windows update site to reinstall. It is possibly corrupted.

Shanmuga I finally got it fixed. In one of the articles you pointed me to I found an addy to another help topic, in there I found a link to windows update troubleshooter. They had listed the exact problem I was having and the solution for it.
It involved dl iuctl.cab, extracting and installing it.
Thank you very much for your help.
