What you will need: (assuming you may want to expand the network at some time)
1) One Linksys (or other brand) 4 port router/switch. The Router will allow you to connect to broadbamd connection now or at some future time.
2) A 10/100 Network Interface Card (NIC) for your PC if there is not already one installed.
3) One PCMCIA Network Interface Card (NIC) for your laptop if there is not already a Network interface built into the laptop
4) Two Cat 5e cables of sufficient length to reach from each of the computers to the router/switch.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
You will need to decide on a name for the network eg, workgroup or auction_net or whatever.
You will need to decide on a name for each computer on the network.

There is not much difference between a 4 port router/switch and and a 4 port hub/switch. You have the benefit of being able to add broadband without disrupting your network. I would recommend it. Broadband is the wave of the future. Prepare for it now the extra $20.00 bucks will be money well spent.
Good luck
