 Ok, need some help here, I just finished building a computer and when I went to install the OS sytem (Win 98SE), I received and error message. It reads as follows: VFAT Device Initialization Failed:
A device/resource required by VFAT isnot present or is unavilable. VFAT cannot continue with application. I did a FDISK and also a complete Format of the hard drive (40 gig) and tried to load OS but I was halted. How can I fix this proble?

Here is one place to start looking:

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/V/VFAT.html

I would also check the MS Knowledge Base and see if they have any specifics about this problem. It could mean that the Startup disk you are using to get into DOS is corrupted and it may simply be a matter of making a new disk. You can get one HERE (http://www.bootdisk.com) to try another.

139063 - Error Message: VFAT Device Initialization Failed
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q139/0/63.asp

Google Search: VFAT Device Initialization Failed during install (http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=vfat+device+initialization+failed+during+install &spell=1)

edit:- cant get the google link to stop breaking but you get the idea.

Since this is happening during setup it sounds like a problem with some of the hardware; ?CDROM etc etc.

If the CD was the case you could detach it, copy the setup files to the hdd from dos or having slaved the hdd to another computer and run the setup from the HDD, which makes the install faster anyways. Then troubleshoot the CD later.

Thanks for responding, as to the cd problem, it is brand new, purchased it when I purchased the motherboard. I don't think that this is the problem, however. I have formated the hard drive previously when I had another error problem (fixed it) and I didn't run into the vfat error message then, so , I think that it might be something else that I am doing wrong.

At what stage of the process does this error occur?
