Hi all,
I have had a problem for some time now. When I play any 3d
games, or sometimes during the playing of an mp3, I experience a lockup
of the machine. At the point of the lockup a srceaming sound pours from my speakers. There is no way out of this without rebooting. The same thing happens sometimes while playing mpegs, streaming video or playing other forms of video. I can't get any mindless entertainment on my machine! Darn it! I have installed all the lattest drivers for my video card (Voodoo 3 3000) and my sound card (creative ensoniq). I have recently reinstalled Windows 98 to no effect. I have 384 megs sdram. AMD k6 2 450 CPU. No one I have talked to has ever heard of this kind of crash. I asked the guy at the local computer shop, never heard of it. If you have heard of this crash it would be helpful to hear from you.

Hello Critical,

Your problem does seem to be sound card drivers. My sound card was sold to me as SoundBlaster 512 (it said so on the box). I had sound problems until I found out that my card was a "creative ensoniq" ... open up your box and get the "identification number" off the chip ... here is what to look for … http://www.windrivers.com/identity/sound/company/CREATIVE.HTM ... as you can see from the list we have three possibilities "by name" but the ID number should insure you get the right drivers.

Hope this was of some help.

Hello muckshifter,

Thank you for the advise. I went to the drivers link you gave but the # on the chip was not in the list. Mine is CT2518, and that was not listed. I have recently installed the Creative Ensoniq PCI driver, I thought that was the right one. I did a test to see if this was a sound card issue. I pulled out the sound card and tried to run a game. My machine still froze. I dont know if it was the same crash because there was no sound card to let me hear the infamous scream. There must be a solution that I have not seen. Thank you so much for your help. I am still trouble shooting if you have anymore ideas.

Very greatful,
