yesterday I was using photoplus 4 to scan photos onto my hdd. I dont know whether that is relevant. but afterwards my photos .jpg which normally open with kodakimaging, wouldnt open, nor did I get the window 'open with'
I had done nothing exept scan photos and save to hdd.
I went into file associations and .jpg wasnt there so I clicked on 'new' then having filled the box I got a screen saying ".jpg is already in use by jpgfile" but I could find no reference to this anywhere.
eventually I gave up and did a scanreg /restore which eradicated the problem.
but, has anyone any ideas how/why this happened.

Little conflicted about posting because, if you have email notification, you will think someone has responded who has a clue..and I don't. But I do have a couple of questions. Did you try opening a jpg that you had made at some point in the past? Was it just the jpgs you made of the photos yesterday that wouldn't open? And also, did you try opening the jpgs in Internet Explorer?
And secondly, I learned recently an easier way to change file associations. You go to Windows Explorer, find a file that you want to change, click on it, then hold down the Shift key and right click on file, and the Open With appears on right click menu. Then you get a list of programs and don't have to browse, etc and go through all the steps of file association.

Hi Kay,
My .jpg's were set to open in kodakimaging. but suddenly they did not open, any off them old or new, the icon shown was the m$ flag, you know the one where there is no association with the file, but when I clicked on them nothing, no 'open with' as usually happens.
But if I open paint or Photoplus or Imaging, then open them with the open command, no problem.
then there was the problem of ".jpg is already in use by jpgfile" which means something must have happened, I ran AVG, Spybot etc. but found nothing.
I know there have been probs with .jpg's in the past *(had some myself) so just wondered if anyone had this prob.

I suppose you are running win9x,
Run winfile.exe
file > associate
Type jpg in the box, check the present association,
and browse to windows folder and select kodakimg.exe
click ok.

I guess since no one else has checked in, that no one else has had this particular problem. But truthfully, since you mentioned Spybot, and I just posted on another thread with problems maybe related to Spybot, I am getting more and more suspicious of Spybot! :)
This one... How do I restore my settings? (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22558)

I would be careful about the Immunize function of Spybot, but in general I don't think Spybot is the problem.
