Ok, I just did a fresh install of win98se on a 40g wd hdd. I did it by booting with a boot disk then loaded with cdrom support. I then copied my win98se setup disk to the hdd, all 101 files.
The install when just peachy. I then put on a 40x cdrom and a cdrw which windows found just fine. I loaded the Roxio easy cd creator software and was able to format a disc...I have 2 printers, one is a Panasonic and the other is a Xerox/fax/printer. The printers are connected to an A/B switch box which is connected to the puter. I first switched to the panasonic printer and it was installed fine. I was able to print to it no problems.I then switched to the Xerox and I then put the Xerox software CD into the cdrom and the cd never autoplayed and then I got the bsod and it showed:

fatal exception yadee yadee....VXD.IOS(01)+ which was in VXD.VOLTRACK(04)+
I hit enter and another bsof:

fatal exception....VXD.CDVSD and also VXD.VMM

ok, my question is, have my vxd files been overwritten? Are they corrupt? Is it the printer(s) software? Is it my cdrw? Is it my cdrom?

How do I know where to troubleshoot this. Where do I start? I have noticed that sometimes the cdrw will not open when you push the open button. Also, I could never get the Xerox cd to run in the cdrom which was strange but it did run (autoplay..)from the cdrw and I was able to load the software that way. What's up with that?

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Go to start run sfc and let Win98 see what files may have become currupted.

gracious: Did the System File Checker show corrupted files?

I didn't notice the "se" after 98 at first, and so I went to Google and put things like "VXD.CDVSD" in the Search box. And kept ending up back at the same "oh oh, you have to contact MS for the fix" here..
fatal exception at bootup (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q197/0/04.ASP&NoWebContent=1) but they said in that article that this problem was fixed with 98SE.

If you have Norton, I found this on the VOLTRACK Tech Advice (http://www.techadvice.com/w98/errors/1/er_00051.htm)

The answer to "where do I start?" is indeed what Classic said..with SFC. But often one can write down the exact error message and put all or part in the Google search box and get answers..good links to fixes. And I have a couple of links in Favorites to sites with explanations, like TechAdvice above and here (http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/fatlexer.htm)

Ok, how do I run SFC? I don't think I have ever had to do that before. What will it look like when it finds corrupted files? Will I understand what it is I am looking at?:p

I haven't had any probs upon boot up. I will next time write down the exact message and try google. I did try to search all the vxd errors that I got..and it got to be more frustrating because I couldn't find specific info.

I do have Norton Anti on this puter and so I will check out the voltrack thingy there.

Thanks guys, if you come up with anything else, let me know! I hate troubleshooting because it opens to many other problem doors LOL LOL

It seems that it has something to do with voulme tracking.....but what the heck that means is beyond me(yeah some things are that obscure). And it seems to have probelms with Norton....so it looks like one or the other has to go.

I would first try to find where it wants to load from and disable it.

Ok...voltrack.vxd is a volume tracking virtual device driver. (that is the part I can't find any more info on)

A Google search turned up a bunch of problems with it (voltrack.vxd) and Norton...BSODs and such.

To find where it(voltrack.vxd) is loading from you will need to look at your config files (autoexec, config.sys, system.ini...all can be found and looked at by running sysedit in the run box).

To run SFC, you do what classic said above..which I didn't know you could do, and tried yesterday right after reading his post. Start, Run, then type sfc in the little box and hit Enter. I thought you had to go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, and then the Tool menu in there. His is a much shorter path..so I learned something.:) There was a thread not too long back with some dispute on whether it's good to run SFC and replace files that are being reported as corrupted. I don't know..I always run SFC after installing a new program, and just "see" which files have altered, and often write down some of them if there's not too many...just in case I have error messages coming up later mentioning those files. Sometimes it is difficult to know which files go with a particular program otherwise. If you run SFC, and it reports corrupted files, write the file names down and click on the Ignore box. That way you can check first and make sure they really need to be fixed. I had some corrupted files reported recently after installing 98SE and found a MS database page that said the files were fine..bug in 98SE..and to just "update" the list and move on. To answer another question, on the SFC, it shows the "old" file and the "new" one, and most often the new one has a newer date. Sometimes it's older, but smaller..go figure. Anyway, it won't be reporting corrupted, just changed, and you can go ahead and click on the Update box. That's assuming you have gone into Settings first in SFC, and checked the box for reporting changed or altered files.

So do what mjc said first.

PS. mjc: Did you understand what they said on that MS database page I linked above? You don't have to explain it to me, I am just curious if you understood it? Would make me feel a lot better if someone here did...:D

THANKS GUYS!!!!!:D I will try these out. I am thinking that since you had mentioned Norton that I will go ahead and uninstall it and see what that does too.
