We are a smaller Christian School with a Windows NT 4.0 network. We are wanting to add some more computers in our classrooms and are considering building them instead of buying them. Should we build PCs with Pentium processors or AMD processors? I know AMD processors are cheaper but are they more unstable? Does it matter to the network?
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks.
A properly assembled and cooled AMD machine is no less stable than an Intel one, for most applications. For the kind of stuff most schools use computers for you should be fine, and see a significant savings in cost.
Also what OS version will you be running on the new machines?

As far as the network is concerned it doesn't matter what processor you use.
The lastest AMD processors are just as stable as the lastest Intell processors, so that shouldn't be a concern. I have an old AMD 650 processor that has never given me any problems. Its been running stable for the last 3 years (I'm going to build a new computer sometime this summer and it'll be using an AMD processor too).
Hope this helps :)

Right now, most of the computers are 98SE with a few ME. We'd like to put XP on the new ones, but on a couple we've tried, we can't get Outlook XP (2002) to work with NT 4.0 to get inter-office e-mail. Any suggestions?

I Think you'll find Windows 2000 gets along better with Windows NT than XP. I could be wrong, it's just my experience....
