View Full Version : A handy Start>Control Panel Tweak

I found this today while doing a little research and found it pretty cool!
It's under the "Creating a submenu for the Control Panel"
I didn't try to copy/paste the registry entry into the new file name, which might be the easy way to go.
If you type in, as I did, there is no space after the Control Panel. the { begins immediately. You can tell, as mentioned, if you see the complete registry entry as part of the file name.
It also showed up when I went to Start>Control Panel where all the registry numbers were displayed. Once I removed the space the Registry entry numbers disappeared and all worked well.
I'm using Windows Me

I'll see if I can find what the Sam Hill I did with it...
Well, I couldn't find the exact one at the office...if I make it home in time to pull the one I saved I'll drop it in before my edit time expires.

an easier way to have the control panel (in WinMe) pinned to the upper part of the start menu and be expandable is to open control panel and drag the icon from the window into the start button.
It will be displayed at the top of the Start Menu as "shortcut to control panel" (you can rename it just "control panel" with a right click), but will also have the expansion arrow to access anything in there with a click.
No fancy registry editing.;)
edit- you can do the same with "My Documents", "My Computer" or any folder really. If you do this for "My Computer" you can access ANY individual file from the Start Menu.
I don't like having my desktop cluttered with shortcuts, so I did this for all my games. I copied all of the EXE files for my games into a folder called "Games" and then dragged that into the Start button. Now I can access and start any game by going there instead of using a desktop shortcut or searching through programs on the Start Menu.

Be nice now Dangerous! :D
I run WinMe lean and mean...it boots exceptionally fast! Actually, it boots much faster than the kids' machine with XP Pro.
I've not had any stability issues. Of course I'm still talking about WinMe and not JustMe! :p

Anyway, it's nearly 6:00 and I'm tired of spending my day staring at Win2k... I'm off to sit and stare at WinXP.

Hehe...very funny! :D
On the contrary Dangerous, I'm actually trying to do the best with my WinMe purchase rather than upgrade which would put a few more bucks into Uncle Bill's coffer! ;)

I personally prefer tne control panel in the task bar, like shown in the attachment.
Add 'My computer' as new tool bar,the control panel will expand automatically.
Can't find the attachment

WinME might boot faster than Win2K but the TTSB (Total Time Spent Booting) is much higher.
Lets assume WinME boots in 15 seconds, and Win2K in 45 seconds.
In 30 days, with the requisite 2 boots per day for WinME, you will have spent 15 * 30 * 2 = 900 seconds, or 15 minutes booting WinME.
In the same 30 days you would have spent 45 seconds booting Win2K.

Whoa, that just about cracked me sled! I had my check book in hand and when I thought about contributing to Billy's kids' college fund again...I slipped right back into denial!
I could compare my Mandrake TTB to my 98, but that would require actually rebooting Mandrake to time it.

I achieved a 'personal best' a couple hours ago on my Linux box:
10:47pm up 56 days, 2:09, 1 user, load average: 0.29, 0.07, 0.02
That's the longest time in four years we've gone without a power failure :D

Just checked the system log on an ME machine that one of the marketing people has... this is the best I've seen ME perform.
12:53pm up 0 days, 0:07:32, 1 user, load average: 0.99, 0.99, 0.99
