View Full Version : Rearranging Icons

I'm running Windows 98SE.
If you go to Start/Find/Files and Folders and click on the 'View' option in the list screen, files can be set to display as Large icons, Small icons, List or Details.

If you then select the 'Arrange Icons' tab, there are options to Arrange Icons/by Name, by Folder etc.
By default, Windows displays them all jumbled up. Sure, you can rearrange them, but next time they revert back to the default setting.

Is there a Registry fix that will remember and 'lock' a particular setting, say, 'By Type'?

With an Explorer window open go to Tools>Folder Options>View and make sure "remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

And please let me know if that works. I always use List view except for the My Computer, Control Panel, and Quick Launch folders..and the lists are alphabetical in mine. I am thinking that "remember each folder's view setting" only applies to whether it's showing icons or a list of file names. But, I have arranged the icons in the order I want on the Quick Launch bar, and that's a folder. So, I am curious for future reference.

malcore: Re: Remember each folder's view settings". You'll find that this doesn't encompass the 'Arrange Icons' seting.
It's quite likely that it cannot be done, even by the Registry.
I'm just trying to find someone that can endorse this.

mike2002: I guess no one is going to endorse your hypothesis, but it sounds good to me.:) And, I apologize..wasn't til yesterday that I looked more closely at your original question and realized that malcore and I both responded to another question. Don't know if there's any relationship between the "View" in the Find Files dialog and "regular" folders. Certainly looks like a different sort of window..hhmm?

Mike 2002,

Start/Find/Files and Folders is a dynamic command,
Try setting the option 'By Type' before you start the search.

kayofcircles: You know what they say - "Always read the question first" (laugh).
Why do I want to alter this particular function? Well, you sometimes search for a particular item and get a list as long as your arm!
To make things worse, all the icons are jumbled up. If you know it's a Folder you want, or an Icon, it's so much easier if they're all lined up instead of being spread all over the whole list.

shanmuga: Yes I do have my Folders view settings set to this all the time, but have you noticed that they can suddenly 'revert' for no apparent reason! ;)

Do you know - I've never used that 'Advanced' function. Don't know why, it's staring me in the face!
It opened up a dialogue box I've never seen before, and I've been using Windows for some 3 years. But which way is quicker; my way or yours, 'bout the same I guess. Thanks for the info Ted.
