I have an old pc about 7 ys old.It is a 486. I fixed the Y2k problem with certain software, but I accidently removed it.What can be done to fix this?(even if it means getting different parts)If I am in the wrong forum, please let me know which one to go to.I am a first time forum user here.

Hey Trucker,
Welcome to the forum. Your post is placed fine.
I just typed in "y2k freeware" (without the quotation marks) into Google search, and got lots of info. There are free downloadable applications that should fix your issues. Seems to me that if you deleted the software that fixed your old system the fixes should still be there. You just won't be able to run the fix again, but then, why would you need to?
Anyhow, try the Google search, it's like Yahoo or Alta Vista, just called Google. Cool? Cool! Then post back and let's see what we can do. I bet there are folks on this forum that'd sell you an old pentium for tickets to a Reds game.
peace,

Thanks for the info. The problem is that it wants the directory or file names.I type them in and it comes out bad file or command name.I cant even get to the first window.Other people have told me to toss it out the window, but I cant afford a new pc right now.I've got a new printer, modem, working monitor. Its not feasible for a new pc.I'd rather replace parts with new parts(MB,processor or what ever need)

Hey,
No guarantee here, but it might work.
Boot to an MS-DOS prompt. At the prompt, type "Date" (without the quotes)
The date that the system has in its memory will show up. It will ask you to type a new date. Type into today's date, being careful to notice if it's using 12 or 24 hour time. Reboot and see if the date held.
A lot of older computers may have had a problem with the actual rollover, but would work just fine if the correct date was entered using the above method.
Good luck.
