Repair? what are you trying to repair and why?????
Please provide more information.....
I just got an HP laptop with Windows XP and I have cable internet in my desktop computer. I tried to just plug the cable modem to the laptop to see if it would recognize it but it didn’t and the network connection of the laptop seems like it is working. I mean the lights in the back are working and the computer shows that it is connected but it just doesn’t send any information through the network.
When I checked the IP address it shows only zeros and when I tried the repair command it says that it can’t renew the IP address.
I already tried the commands ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew but still it doesn’t work. The ipconfig /release works but when I type the ipconfig /renew it says:
“An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.”
I appreciate your help…

Your laptop cannot get an IP address from the cable modem.
I would make sure TCP/IP is installed and configured to get an IP address automatically.
I would turn off the laptop and turn off the cable modem. I would then turn on the cable modem and then turn on the laptop.
I would disable the built in XP firewall.
See what happens after that
