Trying to add more memory to a Compaq Deskpro 575. System has two sticks of 8MB installed (Kingston) I tried several different type's. 4 MB sticks would work installed for a total of 16MB but I allready have that amount installed with the 8MB. If i install more than 16 MB in any combination I receive a error message something about a VXD driver and I should run windows setup. According to specs I should be able to install 192 MB. Also after the additional memory is added the system at boot counts the total amount over the 16MB and request that I strick the F1 key to keep the new memory configuration.
Thanks triplej

hi;
The problem in this machine is that you probably have to install the memory in pairs. For example, you have six memory slots in the machine and you would have to install two banks (slots) of 32 mb, or two of 16, two banks of 8 mb, for a total combined memory of 192mb, if you installed 3 pairs of 32. Do you have the users manual? You can mix megabyte of sizes, as long as they are installed in pairs.
Hope this helps.

Hey jjj,
What was the exact error message. I did a Google search with "vxd driver error" and got lots of hits, too many actually. Can you narrow it down?

First thing to try is go into BIOS, (F1 it said) then save changes and exit, but make NO changes. that's just to show BIOS the new memory is there. That's a common error when you add memory, BIOS sees more than it saw last time, tells you it has a problem. Usually it's CMOS Memory Mismatch.
The VXD part we can't help with until we have the exact error message.

Are you sure you have the right type of RAM? Depending on the model of Deskpro 575, you either have to use EDO or Fast page SIMMS. If you do not have the correct type, the problems you have will result. Go to the Compaq webside and put in your serial number at:
http://www3.compaq.com/support/parts/
This will tell you the exact type of memory you have. I Have also run into problems where persnickity MOBOS require either silver or gold edged SIMMS. Look at the bottom where it goes into the MOBO and look at the color.
The problem is definitely with the memory.
