A friend asked me to reformat and reinstall windows on his computer because it was freezing all the time. It is a pentium 166, 48 mbyte ram and 2gbyte hard drive. Since the reformat we get a message saying there is no mouse attached even though one is. Clicking ok then allows windows to boot fully but with the pointer stuck in the centre of the screen. Any clues to it's cause?

Not sure if this is the right way to do it, but, if it were me, I'd go into Device Manager and remove your mouse and reboot. It should recognize it and reinstall it.

Problem is I can't move the pointer with the keyboard arrows.

Can you move it in safe mode?

This might sound stupid, but, are you sure it's seated properly? Do you have your BIOS enabled to hear beeps and if so, did you hear anything? (If it's possible w/ your pc) I've never had this problem, but, to me, it sounds like either it's not seated properly, the mouse is shot, or a bad port, doesn't sound like a software issue.. Do you have a way to check on another PC? I would shut down, remove it and plug it back in then boot up. I gather it's a serial mouse? Are you sure the port works ok? If the mouse works in another pc you probably have a bad port, if it doesn't work all you probably need is a new mouse. Since I haven't had this problem, if that doesn't work, I don't know, I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. Wait a bit and I'm pretty sure some of the guru's will have an answer. If do happen to you try what I suggested, post back so they know and can go from there.

The mouse works on another computer. I am fairly sure that the mouse is seated fully.

i would try removing the mouse then rebooting it again. but it does sound like it's a hardware issue (port?) or misplaced into the wrong port(sometimes i put the mouse in the keyboard slot with unfamiliar PCs too).
try this: click on the windows key on your keyboard and just use the arrow keys to get into control panel.
let us know what happens.

Hello,
I tried getting into device manager before but I could'nt actually get past just opening the control panel. Using the keyboard arrows just moved me along the top bar, return highlighted 'my computer' then no further. Is there a key combination that will get me into the 'ports' subfolder?

Have you tried to see if another mouse you know is working, works w/ that port?

Is COM1 disabled in BIOS?
Are the setings for it set at the defaults?

Hello again, another day...
I looked in the bios and both com1 and 2 were enabled and when I looked in device manager it says that every thing is working and no conflicts.

Does the system have a modem? If so, if may be set to COM1. Check it out and see. Device manager may not show any red X's or Yellow ???

There is no modem fitted. Also, I tried to use a serial printer on com1, but still not functional.
