Ladies and Gentleman,

What could be a nightmare come true is about to happen, two of the largest computer companies, who both have been having problems lately (could it possibly be the not-so-great machines and low quality support?), have decided to join forces to take on Dell and Big Blue....Hewlett_Packard and Compaq are merging....yes folks, you heard that right, they are about to become one, at a cost to HP of $25,000,000,000.00 (TWENTY-FIVE BILLION DOLLARS)

Check out the story here (http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010904/ts/hewlett_packard_compaq_8.html)!

The companies have blamed their woes on worsening economic conditions and intensifying price wars around the world.

Surely it couldn't be related to making the worst piles of crap in the world????

This is not news I'm glad to hear...but let's look on the bright side...maybe they'll both go down together. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Compaq probably would've gone belly up anyway and HP is probably making a mistake by taking them on since they could outlast Compaq and then pick up the pieces (or market share) for next to nothing.

Since nobody is going to say anthing nice about HP and Compaq. I'll do it. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

HP may not make good computers, but they make great printers and HP network devices are damn good too.

Compaq on the other hand does make great servers. I know of some folks who won't buy anthing else.

So in those areas the merge could work out for them.

I was saying something good about compaq. (mine)

hehe

as I have pointed out before, when you sell/manufacture 10 million more machines than anyone else, you also have that many more that are likely to (ratio) be not so good too.

Look @ DELL, they used to be (IMO) the best.

Now they are becoming almost in the same category as compaq/HP.

(where's "Toaster Control"??)

Pete and I discussed the same point in the chat room last night, the only problem is the average consumer is going to end up with junk and I'm sure that a large part of the sales for both comapanies is in the consumer market, not the business market.

I tend to judge a product on how may complaints I see about it, and for the most part I never see any about Compaq servers, and most of the HP printer problems I see are configuration issues not something actually wrong with the printer, but for both companies quality control seems to stop at the consumer level and support goes right out the window, too. HP recently cut off the major line of support for home users...they shut down their tech support forums. And if the current trends for support continue then the home user will really be out in the cold.

Certainly looks like investors had their say today about this merger. It seems to me these companies are too similiar to get much benefit out of merging.

i'll have to agree with Ghost here and say that HP does make excellant printers, CD-burners, and Compaq makes great business desktops & servers. They just couldn't get their Personal consumer products up to speed-HP's attempt at home computers ( mostly sold by Wal-mart ) are a PC tech's nightmare! All the Compaq systms i've worked on have usually been from BestBuy or Circut City; and they were all of the same generic crappy makeup.

By far i have yet to see any retail system hold it's own against a comparable custom build, but for the average user these above mentioned retail systems are more than adequate. Until they learn a little more about PC"s, then they invarible want a better one. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

In comes sea69 and other small time PC guru's. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

persoanlly, i applaud the HP lady CEO for making this decision; maybe we'll see some desent retail PC's come out of this.

I don't know about that iisbob, cause I have not seen any other pc with my OS or any variation (custom, heath kit whatever!) win9x or especially winME that runs nonstop all the time without errors 24/7.

for over a year, no reformat.

here (http://members.cnx.net/reboot/modems/)

**except mine came with a 19" NEC monitor, and has the T-Bird slot A 256 L2 cache. (and I paid less than what it's going for now... a year ago.. it was the *HOT* pc on the market.. and still is pretty much up there.
