View Full Version : BIOS not detecting harddrive

I have installed a new motherboard and new processor (after a previous attempt with "suspect" components which is another story.) Since I had just done this, everything went well, we booted up, beeped once, monitor worked, everything it seemed.

I went into setup, made some adjustments, per my MOBO manual (yes I have one.) However, the BIOS doesn't recognize either of my two hard drives on auto config, which are both healthy and had worked just prior to this installation. I tried a number of adjustments that seemed to make sense, including new cables, but it still doesn't see them. It does recognize the CD-ROMs which are on the slave IDE.

Suggestions? I can enter the data through "user" on the BIOS ...would that make sense. Because everything else is recognized, I think it has to be something I am overlooking or something very common?

Thanks!

Hi Deb,

Did you hook up the harddrives exactly as they were before? Did you mess with the jumpers? Are you sure you have Pin 1 on the cable connected correctly? Of course, newer ribbon cables are usually keyed, especially the 80pin ones, so there's only one way to install them.

Does your BIOS have a Harddrive Auto Detect feature? If so, try that.

Otherwise, manually entering the harddrive parameters should get you going, assuming all else is equal.

Cheers,

Yes, Blue, I connected everything as they were before, left them in the same place, etc. The cables "do" only go in one way and I tried the BIOS autoconfig ... no luck. I downloaded a BIOS update from the MOBO manufacturer as well as checking their FAQ today while at work. I will check the BIOS to see if I have the newest version.

I will enter manually if I have to and we'll go from there!

Have you by any chance disabled the built-in Harddisk Controllers from your BIOS?

There are some new motherboards which require that one of the hard drives[if both are on the same channel] be set on "cable select" rather than "master" and the other drive set as a slave. This might be an area you want to try different combinations on.

I'm not sure if I disabled that or not ... The BIOS are the most complete I have ever seen, many menus, etc. Where would I have done that?
