A friend of mine builds computers. He dislikes shared memory. I am thinking of building or ordering a computer and how do I stay away from getting shared memory. I hope you understand this question. Thanks.

Hello cptplug and Welcome!
With what little you've given us, I believe he is talking about on-board video "sharing" the main memory.
Just make sure the computer you get has a decent separate graphics card on the motherboard and Not "ON-Board video".

Sometimes onboard video with shared memory isn't so bad. It's often cheaper in the beginning and is sufficient for most people's needs. However, no matter which way you go (or if you can't tell), just ask if the system comes with an "AGP slot" (get it in writing if you can, you wouldn't believe some of the stories I've heard of salespersons not knowing what they were selling!).
If it has an AGP slot, you're fine. That means you can install a separate video card later that will replace the whole shared memory thing, keeping both you and your friend happy! :D
