I just ran into a problem, I installed a Linksys WMP54G Wireless pci Adapter in my sister pc, and now it seems to not be booting at all. I have gone through the process of installing/uninstalling it over and over and still nothing. I thought that maybe the card was bad, so i installed it in my pc, and it worked fine.
What i am doing is loading the drivers like the installation manual says, then inserting the card. After i do this, the pc boots, but by monitor seems not to be getting signal. If i unistall the card, then it boots up fine.
What could the problem be?
Sounds like a possible conflict between th card and the video card...try putting the NIC in a different PCI slot. (the drivers can be left alone, just move the card).

that is what i was thinking, but i have tried all the other slots, and still the same thing.

Is the video card PCI? If so, swap that into another slot and reboot.
If you are getting a video signal, shut down and use the slot the video card was at.
If that doesn't work, there could be a conflict in the BIOS in regard to the PCI slots and the video card.
If the video card doesn't work in the other slots, could be just bad slots and nothing much can be done in that case. Again, it could be just a conflict in the BIOS.
If the video card is onboard , then I'm willing to bet that the video is set to PCI in the BIOS given that is an older system.
How that has any bearing on this, I don't know. :)
Those are just suggestion. It may or may not work, but worth a try.
Also remove the power cord from the computer before installing/removing anything.

its an AGP video card. i have tried switching the card to other pci slots, even put a nic in one of them to make sure that the slots were good. and it picked up the nic, but won't work with the wireless card.
I recall seeing a NIC fix on the IBM web site for the Aptiva
Not sure if that will help.
IBM's can be very picky at times
Also IF you go into the Bios look for a setting to assign Video an IRQ
IF It has that option
The advanced options in the Aptiva are limited :(

My guess is that there ‘s a problem with the detection and [conflict free] allocation of resources.
THE KEY
“PnP/PCI Configuration”
“Reset Configuration Data : Disabled” [needs to be “Enabled” then “Save & Exit Setup”]
I’m still trying to figure out exactly what this setting does.
I installed a new Network Interface Card and it would not work [it wasn’t being enabled] until I set
“Reset Configuration Data : Enabled” then “Save & Exit Setup”.
My present understanding is:
1. You have certain items of hardware connected.
2. You set “Reset Configuration Data : Enabled” then “Save & Exit Setup” and the hardware [which is being detected by the BIOS but ignored until now], is allocated resources in line with the requirements specified within some memory store on each PnP item. These settings are then “locked” and used until this process is repeated. [The removal of one of these items would be detected and the resources go unused.] Any new items detected when this is repeated would result in new allocations. My guess is that adding new items without doing this means they are detected by the BIOS but not allocated resources, so not enabled.
3. I don’t know if BIOS’s have the ability to resolve resource conflicts. If there were conflicts, Windows has the means to resolve them once it boots. I wonder what would happen before that conflict is resolved? Would the BIOS register a conflict it is unable to resolve [and is too dangerous to allow enabled] and so disable the conflicting items of hardware?
4. The BIOS automatically puts the setting back to
"Reset Configuration Data : Disabled"
and by so doing locks the settings once again.

turboeclips,
Last night I tried installing the same wireless card, same problem. I setup the router fine, the wireless notebook card fine, loaded the software for the PCI adapter fine, installed the PCI adapter (linksys WMP54G) and taa-dow!!!! Old bessie locked up tighter than.....well very tight. Actually, I found this site due to this problem. As mentioned by other posters, I am tracing it down to a conflict, linksys support (yes, I broke down and called them) said it was an IRQ problem, call the computer manufacturer. I have a homebuilt system, using a Tekram motherboard, also like you a Pentium II, 350. I've switched everything. Let me know how you are doing. Thanks in advance.
