I think that we would need a little bit more information than what you supplied. If you could tell me what type of system you have and what was the most recent thing you did with the system it would help.

You can boot into Safe mode (f5 while booting, righ after POST, before Win starts loading) and check device manager there, see if there is more than one occurance of the IDE controller, or any other device for that matter, delete the duplicate and reboot.

Sounds like a VIA chipset motherboard. Did you install the VIA "4-in-1" drivers after loading the operating system? VIA (http://www.via.com.tw/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp)

I think Kenja is on the right track the VIA 4in1 drivers containt he IDE controller. www.via.com.tw/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp (http://www.via.com.tw/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp) If I messed up with correct URL try www.via.com.tw (http://www.via.com.tw) and search under drivers.
You also might try highlighting the controller and removing and then click refresh and see if Windows can reload successfully (in Device Manager)
May all your dealings in life be win/win!

Safe mode is Windows, just a cut back version (not all devices are useable and most "extras" are disabled). The f5 just gets you into Safe Mode...
