Small problem here which is driving me nut's!! I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro notebook running XP Pro, and no matter how long I leave the machine idle, I have something running in the background which is constantly accessing the HDD. Looking at the task manager, the CPU is constantly running between 10 and 15%. I have tried Norton Antivirus and ran Spybot to try find the source but with no luck. Could it be coming from a remote machine. Any ideas on this would be much app.
Give it the 3 finger salute ( control Alt del) and look in Task Manger
Then the Process tab.
It should show you what is running and How much in %
It should help you narrow down the possibilities

As Rick is suggesting,
Just look at the processes list in the task manager and guess the culprit.

I found a good web site which gave lists of many of the application codes and whether it was a good idea to disable or not. Was able to configure a few not to run, but still not got to the bottom of the problem. I have tried disableing the network card, using wireless to D-Link router, thinking it may be network problem, but to no avail.
May have to live with this one!!!

You might want to download and run Hijack This and then post the results here. That will tell you everything that is running background and people here can help you figure out what is causing the diarrhea effect on the hard drive.... You can get it HERE.
