I am trying to rebuild an old Dell GXP1. I put in a working WD hard drive and reformatted it. I put in a WIN98 boot disk and it gets errors. It does not see the CD-ROM and it gives an error message about the hard drive. I replaced the HD with another and reformatted it. Again it got the same error. Put the HD back into another system and it worked great. I flashed the BIOS to current version. I have put in the parameters for HD and set it to AUTO. The system is a Pentium II 350, 128 MB of RAM, on-board video (ATI) and on-board sound. I tried both WIN98 and WINME startup disk, selecting to boot with CD-ROM. I have double checked and everything is connected correctly.

Hey,

If you can remember them, post the error messages you were getting here. That will give us something to go on.

Cheers,

I went back to the machine and now it does nothing.....

I could not get the message. The monitor light turns green and then goes to yellow. It sounds like the HD is spinning and the fans are going. I even tried changing out the memory and still nada. Nothing appears on the screen.

Exactly how old is this machine?

How long has it sat around without being used?

You could try replacing the CMOS battery and reloading the BIOS defaults, the battery may be weak enough that it isn't keeping the settings accurately...

Everytime something like this happens to me I first check the cables.

I have tried the cables and nada....I purchased a new battery and again nada....the hard drive makes some noise and then nothing. I won't even turn off from the on/off switch. I have to turn the power bar off. The reset button doesn't work either. I beginning to think the power supply is not working right.

Try swapping out the PSU if you have one to do it with, also check that the switches are properly connected, and maybe give them a shot of contact cleaner (if they aren't sealed).

Well, I tried everything. Replaced the battery and could not replace power supply (Dell only type). Nothing seemed to work until.....I changed the HD to cable-select and bingo...still no CD-ROM....no setting worked on IDE 2 for CD-ROM....added to IDE 1 with cable select and again bingo....Loaded the OS and everyting is working....thanks for all the advice...
