Hi everyone,

I'm getting kind of desperate with my trying to set up a home network.
All the hardware is plugged in, and set up:
I have two desktop PC, one running Win XP, the other Win 2000 Pro. They are both plugged in a Netgear FS105 switch, which is connected to a Motorola SB4100 cable modem.

They both go online fine.

I've tried to run the network wizard thingy on XP, and run it on the 2000 one afterwards, I get an error message. Can't exactly remember what it says, but something like: 2000 has its own way of setting home network, etc. Anyway, I can't run it.

Both computer have the same workgroup name.

Looking around on websites, I see that they want me to install NetBEUI protocol. Alright, I'm sceptical here because when I did that with my old laptop once, it screwed it all up and I ended up having to reinstall the whole OS.

I hope I gave enough info here... I really would like that to work.
Last thing, they both have a firewall installed too!

Thanks!!!!!

Lau

You will have to setup users with indentical names and passwords on "BOTH" computers in order to log in

What do you mean by "indentical names and passwords"?

create one account on each PC with the exact same user name and the exact same password?

Another stupid question:

There is an administrator account on both PCs. Now these ones don't need to be the ones with the same password and name right?

No
The name or manes that need to be the same are those used to share files and printers across your local network

You also need to set the shared items..
Each drive or device you will share needs to be set as shared and How it should be done. ( read only, read/write )

I don't think if you have to have the same name and pasword on both computers in order for the network to work. The main purpose of the network is to share thing betwwen to or more different users. Have you disabled the firewall in the winXP??

Ziba June:

You are 100% WRONG.

To log into a computer that has Windows 2000, you will need to make an account on BOTH computers that has the same name and password. You will NOT be able to log into the Windows 2000 box without this.

The security in win2k is higher than in XP and all other versions of windows prior to 2K
2K was intended for Business use ( hence the higher security )

XP Pro does not require the name/passwords
If it is setup for simple file/printer sharing

Sorry to hog onto this post but similar problem.

WinXP pro - Win98 netwrk. (using TCP and NOT Nebeui)
manual config TCP/IP and can ping 192.XXX.X.X on XP returns OK.

Used setup floppy on 98 to setup there.

Both machines on same WORKGROUP. With TCP end number up one diget on 98 machine

On each machine I can see only machine I am on. Cannot speak to each other.

Ernie:

You should post in a new thread.

Until one of the moderators comes along,

Need more info, is file and printer sharing turned on?

Is the XP firewall hooked up???

What kind of cable/hub??

Are the user names/passwords set up???

Rick,

I didn't say you don't need a name/pwrd for XP to connect to 2k, I am running XP, 2k, and 2k3 and were aware of that. All I was saying is that they don't need to be the SAME name/pwrd, the name/pwrd is already in AD.
