I tried to log onto my OE in box this AM and could not recieve anything, every thing just hung.I then went into accounts/properties etc. and found that my Pop server had changed and did not recognise my password, every thing was just a big mess up. How can/did this occur. It was very annoying to say the least.

Hi stefanus, when you say " my Pop server had changed and did not recognise my password", I assume you mean the account details had changed on your machine, not at your ISP.

I would first suspect some form of trojan/worm/malware. Assuming you have an updated virus scanner, and it shows nothing, have a look in MJC's post (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15179) and get a trojan/spyware scanner. Personally I like Spybot search and destroy, but there are several listed there.

I may be paranoid, but if I am right, then changing your passwords etc would also be a good idea!

Thanx David. I do have Norton and Spybot, obtained from MJC`s Post. You are quite correct in your assumption, it was my account details that had altered! The Idea of changing my password sounds the correct route to take. I have had to many (Invasions) lately but do not realy want to change my e-mail address. Adware and Norton run a check every time I boot up but nothing is reported

If you're using Windows 98 [and you think hardware and software haven't changed], just restart in MS-DOS mode and type "scanreg /restore" [without the inverted commas] at the DOS prompt.
Then select the backup made [automatically at the first successful boot of each new day (after midnight)] just before the configuration problem was introduced. This will restore good copies of your configuration info.

If you think files may have been altered then don't do this.
Instead, re-format your C: drive and restore the latest backup made before the unfortunate file and configuration changes were made.
This will restore both your files and the PC's configuration and is a pretty good way to eliminate infections [assuming the backup is clean].

If you think their may be infections in your boot sectors, then you need to rebuild these using the backup copy made by your "Anti-Virus Rescue Disk".

I have had a very frustrating week. Firstly my OE started to give me problems, then after various replys to my posting I eventually was able to contact by phone my dial up net working company only to be informed that they where very sorry for any inconvenience but they where busy upgradeing there site and the dial up phone number had changed, to add further to my dilemas, "this" forum did not recognise my user name/password. Eventually I was able to discover that my password had been changed. I must have reqested it but cannot remember :o Now to log on to OE it takes for ever. There "Contact Us" never ever results in a reply. I am going to try tomorrow AM Sylvanders suggestion
Thank you all
Stefanus

I've just noticed the possibility of misunderstanding.

When I said:
"re-format your C: drive and restore the latest backup"
I meant a backup [of your C: drive] that you have made using some system of backup that you have in operation, not the backup of the Registry and configuration files that "Scanreg.exe" automatically makes.

I hope this is more explicit.

Out of curiosity, who is your ISP? They should have notified all thier users about any upgrading and changes in settings (IMO)

ErnieK, thanx for your interest. I get onto the OE Via Onetel.net.co.uk.I tried to contact them via their "Contact Us" site and up till now they have not answered me. Logging on now is such a bind, ie. Very slow. I do not know about upgrade it seems as if it has been down graded. :( Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. ( Is this the correct forum for this reply to you ??)

Have not been there for a few months but try poping over to net4nowt. This is/used tobe avery informative site about various UK ISP's. Gave good info about each (detrimental & positive) and good help when having problems. I think the site is at www.net4nowt.co.uk or www.net4nowt.com

EDIT- Yes links work. site still there but haas changed since I last visited. Looks like lots more info available.
