I have a small windows 2000 network. All but two machines are XP, the other two are win 98. The network is ethernet and we have DSL with the modem connected to a linksys firewall and then running to a 16port hub (we have more connections that are not used).

One of the win 98 machines cant get ie to find the internet. It can find the server and access all the files on the file server and is seen on our network.

I compared the settings to the other win98 machine and made them the same and no luck. IE cannot find any web page.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction. I have checked all the TCP/IP setting, changed them around and nothing seems to work.

Thanks

from ie:

type http://192.186.1.1

This should bring ip the linksys aplet. If not, you cannot see the router at all.

Since you are behind the firewall, it;s ok to post your local Ip address here, just don;t post your real IP address or what the Linksys firmware calls the WAN IP address.

For example my lan has WAN IP address and has local IP addresses of

192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.107

What does WINIPCFG say your IP address is.

IS TCPIP installed and bound to the ethernet card?????

Classic

I had the address set to 192.168.1.40 and changed it to 192.168.1.85 (and I know that either of these does not conflict with the other workstations).

I will try and see if I can find the router.

I think you might have hit what I was trying to do but have no idea how and that is TCP/IP bound to the ethernet card. How do I do this?

(I think what you mean by this is that when I look at the network properties, where it says TCP/IP after it the name of the ethernet adapter should be displayed, however on this machine there is nothing).

Going to check now to see if I find the router and what winipcfg says the ip is.

Thanks and I will post back momentarily.

I see on the network card where there is a check box and it is checked for binding to tcp/ip.

If i go to a command prompt I can ping the router and yahoo.com, however, I cannot ping through ie. I continue to get the same error message.

WINIPCFG shows everything properly, the correct local ip address, correct gateway, etc.

Should I reinstall IE? I ran the repair on IE but still no luck. Not sure if I have a more current version of IE on a disk, the machine is running IE 5.5.

Thanks

CONNECTION CLOSED BY REMOTE SERVER

is the error message I get when I try and run Opera as opposed to IE.

So I guess the problem is not related to IE but something else.

1. Re-install TCP/IP.

2. Run the internet connection wizzard OR under IE

go to Tools-->Inernet Options--> Connections-->Setup.

Choose Lan as the option. and follow the prompts.

see if either of these options work.

BTW: How did you chnage the IP address???????

I have done all that. Reloading TCP/IP. Installed via control panel and network.

I also did it via IE.

I changed the IP address by going into TCP/IP properties and defining the IP as opposed to letting it find it on its own.

I have already let it try to find all the settings on its own.

You will definitely cause problems if you assign an IP address to the card while Linksys acts as a DHCP server....
