I would like to get a fresh start on my AMD Athlon (windows XP), but I am not very good with that stuff. My main concern is being able to format the C: if I know how to do it correctly, and then be able to reinstall my directX, Video Card, the media player, and of course XP.

Could anyone give me a little walkthrouhg of how to do this?

Basically what i am asking is how do I get my computer to exactly how it was when I custom ordered it?

Note: I have no idea about Command Prompt (thats what i use to format the drive right?) or any internal things, so crazy compy vocabulary has to go down the drain ;).

Ask in forums or look for BUDFRED HE will
know i do know in a fashion so it will be better from somebody like budfred.
I come on this forum a lot to learn ,but do not post as i an not as knolegable as BUDFRED .
I have read many of his posts and he does make a lot of sense, and he joins in on a variety of subjects.
So he will DEFINATELY know the right answers.

Well I was going to reply, but I suppose we had better wait for Budfred.

Perhaps a stroll along the Headrow would help clear my head in the meanwhile.

Ah that's better. Now the first thing would be to know if this is a proprietary pc and if so what make/model.

Do you have restore disks, a restore partition or a WinXP installation CD??

Just a suggestion.

Keep personalities out of posts unless you are specifically replying to help that you have received. Piggy-backing publicly like this doesn't help the thread starter.

Some post more often than others but that is not in itself a guarantee of brilliance. We are all, myself especially, not infallible.

Since my name has been bandied about quite a bit here, I would like to chime in. I appreciate the confidence & the complement 21up, but truth is that Paul is a lot more knowledgeable about all of this stuff than I am... I am learning from him constantly and if I get it right, it may be because of something I learned from him. We all learn from each other around here, Paul just has a head start on most of us....

That said, ShardOfJustice, as Paul was indicating, if you have WinXP install disk, that will be all you need. If you have some other Restore disk or something else, it might be a little more complex, so you need to let us know what the story is...

Thanks Budfred :D :) :D

ShardOfJustice--hi there, if you want to reformat a pc w/ windows xp on it you have to do a couple of things.

1st- backup anything on your pc if you need to
2nd- you have to put the xp disk in the drive and restart your pc,when it boots up its going to begin to read some files off the cd and eventually its going to show you some info about space on hard drive and it will ask you if you want to repartition the drive, well then you will select I think R (which stands for repartition). And then it will ask you some more questions that are very easy to answer.

*****Very Important*****

I dont know if you a have a floppy or cd rom but before you do any of this make sure they are both listed 1 and 2 in your bios. Its ok to have your first boot device as floppy and second as cd rom, it should automatically run the cd rom if no floppy is in the drive.

From here just let it work and when its done installing you can start installing your other programs!

Any questions please ask!!!!!

Scarface

Ok, I have my computer formatted but now there is a problem...it says I dont have the hardware (sound card) to play audio. So...I had a sound card before will I have to buy a new one??? I know I dont have a disk for it....

Budfred
06-17-2003, 08:58 PM
Do you have a separate sound card or do you have sound on the motherboard (very common). Either way, you need to figure out what it is and you can then download drivers unless it is one that doesn't have drivers compatible with WinXP. You can try running AIDA32 (http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32) to find out what it on your system.

ShardOfJustice
06-17-2003, 09:06 PM
Do you have any suggestions for finding out other then downloading a prog? I just formatted my computer and I am a little touchy. Dont feel like having extra things on my comp.

ShardOfJustice
06-17-2003, 09:08 PM
Never mind, I am downloading it....

ShardOfJustice
06-17-2003, 09:10 PM
Ok, I have it installed, now where would the sound card be under if I do have one?

Budfred
06-17-2003, 10:15 PM
I can understand being touchy... Have you installed an antivirus and firewall yet. I always do that before I download anything else just to be safe. To reassure you a bit, a lot of us here have downloaded AIDA32 and I haven't heard of any problems, but it is still a good idea to use safe download practices....;)

I would just look in the AIDA32 report for any info about the sound card and post back what you find. If it isn't there, we will need to either take info off your sound card (if you have one) or figure out what your motherboard is to find out what the sound is on it.

ShardOfJustice
06-17-2003, 11:20 PM
I didnt find anything that looked like a sound card to me, the only thing that might have been one is an abbreviation, there were lots of things like STP TCCVOP and stuff like that.

THis isnt going to require dissasembling th ecomputer is it?

Budfred
06-18-2003, 12:32 AM
Hopefully that won't be needed, but we can probably talk you through it if it is.

Look for references to your motherboard. You could even post the first page of the report here and we can find the relevant info. Just be sure to delete anything that looks like it might be your password or anything like that before you click on "Submit Reply". You can just copy and paste to post it.

Paul Komski

It may now be obvious that there were reasons for asking what make/model your pc was and whether you had restore disks, a restore partition or an installation CD - prior to formatting.

Even at this late stage, the more info you can give about your hardware generally - the better.

Also RClick MyComputer>>Properties>>Hardware>>DeviceManager and report on any items that have yellow exclamation or question marks beside them.

If you go to
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Downright_pages/downrights_a-z.htm and download the SoundCard Detector 2.0 E (210K) this MIGHT detect your sound card for you.

Also try running dxdiag from the run box to see if there is any useful information there.

PS With respect to opening the pc case, can you confirm that this pc is no longer under warranty, since that would negate any such warranty.

Scarface
06-18-2003, 05:42 AM
go to control panel/add new hardware and click next to go thru the wizard, then select that the hardware your searching for is in the list, you should be looking for a little speaker on the list,if you find a speaker, double click on it and see if it says its working properly or look to see if it has a code by it...if that doesnt work go to your Internet explorer, click on tools/windows update and scan your computer there for drivers, that should fix it...Are you using windows xp or 2000? thanks- Scarface

Scarface; regarding XP/2000 - this is how this thread started.

My main concern is being able to format the C: if I know how to do it correctly, and then be able to reinstall my directX, Video Card, the media player, and of course XP

ShardOfJustice

There are two pieces of hardware with a yellow exlamation mark over them, they are Multimedia Audion Controller and PCI Simple Communications Controller.

ShardOfJustice
06-18-2003, 11:22 PM
I am using a Windows Xp with an AMD Athlong Processor

Deagle
06-19-2003, 01:18 AM
i believe it means that those hardware aren't compatible with windoze xp so u will have to look for specific xp drivers for those things.
Oh and its Athlon:D

Budfred
06-19-2003, 10:36 AM
It could also mean you have an IRQ conflict or a ghost driver installed. I would go into Safe Mode and Remove any drivers that show up under the sections with yellow exclamations and then reboot and reinstall the drivers. The PCI controller will probably reinstall automatically, but you may need to find the sound card drivers for the other one.

Paul Komski
06-19-2003, 03:45 PM
If these yellow exclamation marks are appearing after a clean install of WinXP then it would appear that you are going to need to obtain and install the specific WindowsXP drivers for your Modem and Sound Card.

What is the make/model of this pc or if it is not proprietary, then do you know what motherboard is installed in the box.

ShardOfJustice
06-20-2003, 03:29 PM
1. Sorry I ticked the G button to make it Athlong.

2. I dont know what my motherboard is.

3. Does reinstalling drivers mean buying new software or just going a web site and downloading?

4. My modem is already set up. Why would I need to obtain and install a new new driver for it? I think I might have already done that in the first place anyway unless there a seperate sound driver for my modem...

ShardOfJustice

I sort of need a solid answer of what to do rather than 3 ideas.

Budfred
06-20-2003, 04:02 PM
Sorry, but the way it works around here is that we all try to give you the best help we can based on the information that you give us and that means you are likely to get a lot of different ideas and have to sort through them. Generally the way that computer problem solving works is a process of elimination. You start at the obvious likely problems and you work your way down to the less obvious problems.

That said, you will probably need to update your modem driver because you are indicating that the driver you have has a problem... the yellow exclamation mark. You can generally go to the web site for the device maker and download the latest driver for free.

There are various ways to find out what your motherboard is, if someone doesn't show you before I get home, I will give you a link to a program that will probably do it.

ShardOfJustice
06-20-2003, 04:27 PM
my modem is really secondary, unless it plays a part in my sound problems. I currently have comcast cable internet should I go to comcast's site for the driver update?

Budfred
06-20-2003, 05:09 PM
If you have Comcast, the modem may not even be used. Do you have an external cable modem? If so, it is probably connected through an ethernet port and the entry in Device Manager is for some other modem.

If you have a modem in the computer that you can remove, you may want to do that and then remove the driver. If it is onboard, just open the Properties for the modem and indicate "Disable in this Profile". And yes, it may be effecting your sound.

ShardOfJustice
06-22-2003, 11:27 PM
And I would use AIDA to do the uninstalling as modems dont appear under the hardware device manager?

ShardOfJustice
06-22-2003, 11:40 PM
In other terms where can I find the modem. I am in AIDA right now looking in my mother board, these are the listings, I dont see anything that looks like a modem...

CPU

CPUID

Motherboard

Memory

SPD

Chipset

BIOS

Hehe, just to give you lots of things to think about I also found my cable modem (I am pretty sure its external figuring it sits on top of my computer blinking and connected by a USB cable).

Under Network Adapters:

Direct Parallel

-Motorola Surfboard 4200 USB Cable Modem

-Motorola SurfBoard 4200 USB Cable Modem - Packet Sheduler Miniport

WAN miniport (IP)

WAN miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport

WAN miniport (L2TP)

WAN miniport (PPOE)

*Note the dashes arent actually in the list I just used them to highlite the listing.*

Budfred
06-23-2003, 12:07 AM
The whole thing about the modem was based on the info you gave earlier about items that were highlighted in Device Manager. It is looking like you don't actually have a modem and the problem is with whatever your sound drivers are. What does it say in AIDA about sound?

Budfred
06-26-2003, 09:14 PM
I just quickly scanned over the previous posts and realized there are some important details we don't know.

1. Is your computer a brand name and model? If it is, what is it?
2. Do you have a sound card or the sound on the motherboard?
3. How does AIDA32 refer to your motherboard? If you have onboard sound, we will need to look for the drivers on the motherboard website.

It may be worthwhile for you to copy and paste the summary info about your system to a post here so we can see all the details. Check for personal info before posting and delete it. This would include things like the IP address for your internet connection (I don't remember if it is on that page).

Ok, I found the info for your motherboard. Go to this page (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_list.php) and download the drivers for the Via chipset which should be the first one on the page. Install it and see if your sound works....

ShardOfJustice
06-26-2003, 10:00 PM

06-26-2003, 10:01 PM

Budfred
06-26-2003, 10:57 PM
I didn't download and open the file, but if it is like most driver files it will require you to install the drivers. You would Remove the things that have the exclamations in Device Manager and then reboot or use Add New Hardware in Control Panel to have Windoze find and install the drivers. You will need to know where they are stored so you can direct Windoze to them. You figure this out by noting where they are installed when you open that file. If need be, open it again and note where they go...

ShardOfJustice
06-26-2003, 11:03 PM
Ok, so i am going to see where the via chipset goes to, and then point the reinstaller to that place when reinstalling the drives?

ShardOfJustice
06-26-2003, 11:06 PM
nm, it doesnt tell me where it installs to...

ShardOfJustice
06-26-2003, 11:21 PM

Ok, try this: Remove the exclamations again and open the download Via file. It is possible that it does automatically install the drivers. You probably ought to do this in Safe Mode to make sure you delete whatever drivers might be under those headings....

ShardOfJustice
06-27-2003, 11:38 AM
I am not so sure how to get into safe mode unless my computer got an error and had to shut down...

Budfred

Usually by tapping on F8 as the system prepares to boot into Windoze after the main boot screen...

ShardOfJustice
06-27-2003, 01:19 PM
The only option i have is normal Winows XP Home Edition...

Budfred
06-27-2003, 01:58 PM
I am not that familiar with WinXP, so someone who is may have to get involved in the discussion.

That said, since you are using WinXP, have you tried the Repair function from the CD install menu. To access it you boot from the CD and choose Install, but then choose Repair from the next menu rather than going ahead with an actual install. It might be worthwhile to try it and see if it can fix the sound problem, especially since you have probably now installed the correct drivers.

ShardOfJustice
06-27-2003, 02:12 PM
alrighty, thanks bud.

ShardOfJustice
06-27-2003, 02:49 PM
Ok, I got into safe mode (it appears after i hit F8 i had to hit it again), I uninstalled the exclamations, and intalled the VIA chipset. There was no difference...:(

After that I booted from my XP disk and got into repair when it asked me, "Which windows installation would you like tot repair?". Of Course I didn't know, i tried A-Z as you could only type on letter. Then all of a sudden a blue screen error came up saying I had to restart to save my memory from an error...

Budfred
06-27-2003, 03:22 PM

The drivers should be part of that file I directed you to. I am not sure they exist independently, although you could try to track them down using the specs for that board that are on the same site that has the Via download.

ShardOfJustice
06-27-2003, 05:02 PM

Budfred
06-27-2003, 05:46 PM
Might as well give it a try, it sure sounds like the right thing, unless it is for a different version of the same onboard audio. The worst that could happen is that you would have to Remove it and the best is that you have sound!!

ShardOfJustice
06-27-2003, 05:50 PM
You're right but just removing may be an understatement, there is no uninstaller so i would have to rummage throuhg all the files in whatever folder(s) it was installed to and see what was created today, unless it makes its own...anywayz downloading it anyway:D

(1 minute later) It also hasnt passed windows logo testing...just as the dreaded Nvidia that started this 4 (almost 5) page thread.
