Five months ago I bought a pre-assembled computer from parts I specified. It worked wonderfully until a week ago.
The problem started when I went off to class one day with the computer running. The only extra thing running was SETI, and I had done a virus scan the night before.
When I get back from class the monitor has turned itself off but the case *sounds* like it is running fine.
I try to turn the monitor back on and it immediately pops off.
I try to do a reboot, nothing.
I try to turn it off using the front power key, nothing.
I eventually use the plug to turn it off ( I know ).
Here are my comp specs:
800 mhz anthlon
EP-8KTA Epox mobo
128 megs generic pc133 ram
generic geforce 2 mx video card
soundblaster live
Creative CDrw
DLink ethernet card
Generic modem
generic floppy drive
Here are some of the symptoms:
Every peripheral seems to have power.
The fans in the case run.
There are no beeps (and I know the computer CAN beep).
The monitor wont turn on at all.
The speakers dont pick up the typical windows boot sound.
The power supply indicator says 110 volts (although it always has).
The front power key doesnt work properly if pushed.
The front power key will turn the comp off if held for 5 seconds.
Some of the things I have tried are:
Reseating everything.
Made sure all data and power cords were connected.
Using a working graphics card.
Using working memory in varying DIMM slots.
Removing all extra peripherals.
Resetting the CMOS (someone told me to do this ).
Used a known working monitor.
Some of the things I have yet to do are:
Reseat the CPU ( I can't get the heatsink easily off ).
Remove the MOBO from the case and try it on cardboard or something similar (this would take a lot of fiddling around).
This is ready to drive me batty, any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you need more information then please ask.

I finally decided to take the pludge and buy a new cpu. After I installed the CPU I was able to get video and booted as far as the bios screen. Then a very similar problem - my monitor shut itself down and the system would *appear* to be running ok. I cleared the CMOS, and with the case removed I tried restarting and recieved a CMOS: checksum error. I entered the "fail-safe" bios settings and my computer finally appeared to work properly.
Today, nearly 15 days later, I put the case back on my computer to prepare it for moving into an apartment near my univeristy. However, the moving of the computer was delayed and I decided to use the computer some with the case left on. You see, after 15 days of it working very well, I thought my problem had been fixed, unfortunately, I think I was wrong. After around 40 minutes of runtime from the case-left-on boot my monitor shut itself down...
I tried starting it back up and I am always able to get video to see the correct Video card BIOS information for around 5 seconds and then the monitor turns itself off. I am not able to get to bios to alter settings or to check cpu temp :/
My new CPU and heatsink are:
Thunderbird 950
Thermaltake II (or something similar, recommended by AMD)
I have tried clearing CMOS by use of the Clear CMOS jumpers. Unfortunately I am not sure if I have been successful. You see, epox's web site and manual contains no information about the proper way to use these jumpers. I have tried putting the jumping to clear cmos with it unplugged/plugged,power switch on/off, power key hit/not hit. I would LOVE to know the PROPER way of doing this for an Epox 8kta motherboard. I realize that I could pop out some battery and short circuit the mobo but I would prefer to do it using the jumpers. I recieve no error beep during any of this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
