I'm thinking about sitting my PC on the floor under my desk. It is a carpeted floor which means that we will be running the vacuum cleaner next to the PC. Being that the motor on the vacuum cleaner has a magnet in it--well at least I think that part of a motor is magnetized--could that do any harm to the data on the hard-disk? Thanks.

NO not a problem I would hate to think I couldn't use a magneted screwdriver to take the HDD out or pick up a screw that was lost in the crack of the case.. Now your not going to want to take a magnet and stick it to the HDD but in all practical purpose the amount of time you will be around it not a problem.Just like those floppy disks that you store your information on, a hard drive uses magnets to keep track of all the information on your computer.

Another thing to keep in mind when a PC is sitting on a carpeted floor is the frequency of cleaning out the dust bunnies. That frequency should be higher than if the case were sitting on a desk.

Just another thought. How big are the feet on the case?

Are they big enough to keep the bottom of the case, and the air inlet clear of the carpet?

A piece of card over the carpet will help stop dust being drawn into the machine from the carpet.

After all, if the fans are blowing air out of the back and top, the inlet at the bottom becomes indistinguishable from a hoover!!

I have my computer on the floor and as everyone has said it dusts up fast. I have to keep an eye on the temperature because the heat sink gets packed up with dust pretty quick. On the average I have to give it a good cleaning every 2 or 3 months. Of course if your not a crappy house cleaner like me you should get more time between cleanings.

I would invest in one of those clear plastic things they put under desks to make it easier to move your chair around. Clean the carpet really well, put the plastic on the floor and then put the computer on the plastic.
